No. 7 Women's Soccer Drops Tough 2-1 Double Overtime Decision To Mary Washington

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 double overtime decision in the team's home opener to Mary Washington Wednesday night.

Marica Betoney put the Captains on top early scoring from about 25 yards out in the 9th minute off a feed from Jenn Campbell. The Eagles tied the score at 1-1 in the 27th minute when Hannah Pearson punched one home, unassisted.

The two squads played scoreless soccer in the second half and in the first overtime session. With 2:17 left in the second overtime, Kate Parvin collected a loose ball and shot it from about 20 yards out just over the reach of CNU keeper Dineen Sampson for the game winner in the 108th minute.

UMW out-shot Christopher Newport, 9-4. Sampson had four saves in net.

CNU falls to 3-1 on the year while Mary Washington improves to 3-1-1. The Captains return to action Sunday as they host Lynchburg with kick-off set for 1 pm.
