No. 23 Football Outscores Rowan 13-3 In Second Half, Comes From Behind To Win 23-17

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's defense stepped up in the second half and help No. 10 Rowan to just three second half points en-route to the Captains 23-17 win Saturday afternoon.

CNU trailed 17-10 with 10:03 left in the third after the Profs Dan Roberts nailed a 23-yard field goal. The Captains Jay Graham set a new school record with three field goals, two of which came in the third quarter when he connected from 29 and 19 yards to cut the lead to one, 17-16, with 1:22 left in the third.

In the fourth, Tunde Ogun scored his second touchdown of the game with 2:04 remaining in the game as he scampered three yards for the score. Graham's PAT made it 23-17.

Rowan had one final chance to tie or take the lead but Matt Long picked off his third interception of the game, another school record, at the CNU 30-yard line with 17 seconds to go to seal the victory, the first for CNU against Rowan in six tries.

Davon Edwards put Rowan on top just over a minute into the game as he took a reverse 67 yards for the score. The Captains responded with 10 unanswered points to take the lead. Graham hit his first field goal of the game with 14:12 left in the opening half from 37-yards out. Ogun scored his first touchdown of the game with 8:59 left in the second half, this one from 4 yards out to lead 10-7.

Rowan re-took the lead with 3:55 left in the half when Joe Rankin hit Edwards on a 25-yard pass fore the score.

Rankin finished 18-of-35 passing for 166 yards and three interceptions. Mark Lisa caught five balls for 47 yards.

Ogun rushed 21 times for 55 yards. Todd Faison was 13-of-27 for 163 yards and pick. Jesse Bradshaw caught five passes for 84 yards.

CNU is 1-0 and heads to Texas next Saturday to take on No. 4 Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7 pm eastern.
