NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's men's soccer team opened the 2007 season with a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite on day one of the VCAM/CNU Classic Friday night.

The day began with Greensboro knocking off three-time defending national champion and top-ranked Messiah, 1-0.

Michael Caro put the Captains on the board early as he beat three defenders and scored just over two minutes into the game.

Freshman Tyler Clare, playing in his first collegiate game, scored twice, once in the 43rd minute off a feed from fellow freshman Jared Knaus. His second score game in the 74th minute off a pass from Kenny Huttman.

CNU out-shot the Royals, 14-4. Tommy Vieten had two saves for Christopher Newport.

The Captains, 1-0, return to action Saturday as they host top-ranked Messiah at 7:30 pm.
