Men's Basketball Drops 79-63 Decision At Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball was stung by the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon 79-63 Wednesday night.

 

The Captains stayed in the game for the first 15 minutes of the opening half, trailing by four, 28-24, with 5:25 left on David Mustian's three-pointer. RMC's Justin Short scored the Jackets last nine points of the half as Randolph-Macon out-scored Christopher Newport 17-10 over the final five minutes to lead 45-34 at the break.

 

The second half belonged to Randolph-Macon as they Yellow Jackets held CNU to just 9-of-30 (30%) from the floor, including 1-of-7 (14%) from behind the arc. RMC led by double digits for the majority of the second stanza and led by as many as 23, 79-56, on Jeremy Dixon's lay-up with 3:18 to play. RMC was 14-of-26 (54%) from the field.

 

RMC would not score a bucket the rest of the game as the Captains scored the game's final seven points for the final margin.

 

For the game, the Captains finished 21-of-58 (36%) from the field, 8-of-19 (42%) from long range and 13-of-15 (87%) from the charity stripe. The Yellow Jackets shot 32-of-57 (56%) from the floor for the game, including 10-of-22 (46%) from downtown and 5-of-7 (71%) from the free throw line.

 

Short led RMC with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Dixon finished with 18 points and Jordan Brown added 13 on 5-of-7 shooting, including three three-pointers. David Carlson contributed 11 and five rebounds.

 

Conley Taylor paced CNU with 19 points off the bench on 7-of-9 shooting. Theo Baker had 10.

 

RMC is now 3-2 on the year while Christopher Newport falls to 0-5. The Captains return to action Sunday as they host Valley Forge at 2 pm.
