Men's Basketball Falls 87-59 To Trinity (CT)

ATLANTA, GA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad dropped an 87-59 decision to Trinity (CT) on day one of the Stormy Petrel Classic hosted by Oglethorpe Saturday afternoon.

 

The Captains led 28-24 with 4:08 left in the first half on Conley Taylor's lay-up before the Bantams closed the half on an 11-3 run to lead 35-31 at the break. Trinity scored the first 13 points of the second half before Michael Green's lay-up put Christopher Newport on the board in the second half.

 

The Bantams caught fire in the second half, shooting 20-of-27 (74%) from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Trinity's defense limited CNU to just 9-of-26 (35%) shooting from the floor in the second half, including 2-of-5 from long range. Trinity out-scored the Captains, 52-28, in the second half.

 

For the game, the Bantams were 34-of-59 (58%) from the floor, 6-of-18 (33%) on three-point attempts and 13-of-24 (54%) from the free throw line. For the Captains, CNU was 20-of-60 (33%) from the field, 6-of-13 (46%) from behind the arc and 13-of-22 (59%) from the line.

 

Russ Martin paced Trinity with 18 points and eight rebounds. Robert Taylor added 14 points, Luke McDougall added 12 and Paul Rowe finished with 10 points and eight boards.

 

Joshua Russell led Christopher Newport with 11 points and Green contributed 10.

 

Trinity improves to 7-2 on the year as the Captains fall to 1-8. CNU returns to action Sunday as they take on the loser of the Mt. St. Vincent/Oglethorpe game at 4 pm.
