Women's Basketball Hangs On For 79-72 Win Over Lynchburg

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad concluded the 2007 portion of its schedule on a positive note by defeating Lynchburg, 79-72, Tuesday evening.

 

LC scored eight of the first 10 points of the game, but saw its lead quickly fade away as the Captains went on a 17-9 run to take the lead for good, 19-16, with 11:14 left on Chelsie Schweers' three-pointer.

 

CNU would take a 40-31 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Captains were 18-of-34 (53%) from the field in the first half. LC was 12-of-30 (40%) from the floor. Both team finished 2-of-7 from behind the arc.

 

In the second half, Christopher Newport would extend its lead to as many as 13, twice, with the final time coming with 6:44 left in the game. The Hornets, however, managed to stay in the game and were able to whittle the lead down to as many as three, with 1:26 left in the game.

 

The Captains hit four of six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

 

LC finished 27-of-72 (38%) from the field, 4-of-17 (24%) on three-point attempts and 14-of-23 (61%) from the charity stripe. Tamara Snead paced Lynchburg with 16 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Dana Esposito finished with 10 and Brittany Dahn added nine points and 11 boards.

 

Christopher Newport finished 32-of-64 (50%) from the floor, 7-of-15 (47%) from long range and 8-of-14 (57%) from the free throw line. Colandra Rollins led the Captains with 23 points and 14 rebounds, her third straight double-double. Schweers finished with 22 and eight assists. Jessica Moore added 13 points and eight rebounds while Michele Russell finished with 12 points and six assists.

 

The Hornets fall to 3-3 on the year while CNU improves to 4-1. The Captains return to action January 4 when they host number one-ranked Mary Washington at 4 pm.
