Womens Basketball Falls 81-69 At Goucher

TOWSON, MD – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad dropped an 81-69 decision Saturday evening.

 

Goucher led by as many as 16 points in the first stanza but saw its lead slip late as the Captains cut it to 41-36 at the break. Both teams shot exceptionally well with the Gophers finishing 17-of-34 (50%) from the field while CNU was 15-of-29 (52%) from the floor.

 

Christopher Newport gained some momentum coming out of the locker room at halftime as Colandra Rollins completed the 16-point comeback by snapping a 55-55 tie with 12:28 left in the game. CNU led by as many as six, 65-59, on Shannon Perry's lay-up with 7:56 to play.

 

Chelsie Schweers' bucket with 6:02 remaining in the game gave CNU a 67-64 lead, however, it would be the final field goal the Captains would make as they finished the game 0-of-11 from the floor. Goucher's Shadae Swan put her team ahead for good on a lay-up with 4:49 left.

 

The Gophers finished 33-of-68 (49%) from the field, 6-of-13 (46%) from behind the arc and 9-of-17 (53%) from the charity stripe. Swan tied her career-high with 34 points on 14-of-20 shooting, including 3-of-5 from long range. Amber Smith contributed 14 points and 11 boards.

 

Christopher Newport shot just 10-of-38 (26%) from the floor in the second half to finish 25-of-67 (37%) for the game. CNU was just 2-of-15 (13%) on three-point attempts and 17-of-24 (71%) from the line.  Rollins paced CNU with 24 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Schweers added 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Megan Stangroom contributed 11 for the Captains.

 

Goucher improves to 4-2 on the year while Christopher Newport falls to 2-1. The Captains now have two weeks off and return to action Saturday, December 15 when they travel to cross-water rival VA Wesleyan with tip set for 2 pm.
