DANVILLE, VA – Christopher Newport's football team defeated Averett 45-14 Saturday afternoon.
Todd Faison and Tunde Ogun combined to provide all of CNU's offense as the duo combined for all six touchdowns.
Ogun ran for 112 yards on 20 carries and three rushing touchdowns. Faison was 23-of-32 for 313 yards. He threw for three touchdowns and had one pass intercepted.
Ogun opened the scoring with a 3-yard run with 9:21 left in the first. Jay Graham's point-after was good and CNU led 7-0. Ogun scored his second TD of the game, this time from one yard out, with 1:38 remaining in the first to give the Captains a 14-0 lead.
In the second, Faison threw his first touchdown pass, a 5-yarder to T.J. Foster with 10:58 left in the first half.
Averett cut the lead to 21-7 on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 5:20 left in the second. Faison's second TD pass came with 14 seconds left in the half when he hit Jake Preli on a 16-yard reception.
In the third, Averett cut the lead to 28-14 when Randy Bianchi intercepted Faison's pass in the endzone and returned it 100 yards for the score.
Ogun's third TD run came on a 1-yard plunge with 4:16 left in the third. Brian Long caught Faison's third TD pass came with nine seconds to play in the third.
The final score of the game came off the foot of Graham as he broke his own record for the longest field goal in school history. His 46-yard field goal with 12:10 to play in the game broke his own record by a yard.
CNU totaled 487 yards of offense and held the Cougars to just 169 yards.
Jesse Bradshaw caught 10 passes for 143 yards.
Averett falls to 0-9 overall and 0-6 in the USA South. CNU is now 6-3 on the year and 5-1 in conference play. Christopher Newport concludes the regular season next Saturday when they travel to Ferrum with kick-off set for 1 pm.
