FERRUM, VA – Christopher Newport's football team concluded the regular season with a 34-23 win on the road at Ferrum Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard first on Ronnie Edwards 15-yard TD run with 12:54 to go in the first quarter.
CNU tied the score with 9:22 left in the opening stanza when Todd Faison found Jesse Bradshaw for a 3-yard TD pass. The Captains went ahead 14-7 before the end of the first on Mario Barnes fumble recovery in the end-zone.
Bradshaw caught his second TD pass from Faison, this time from 31 yards out to put CNU ahead 21-7. Ferrum cut the lead to 11 on Clint Slappey's 29-yard field goal with 9:53 remaining in the half.
Tunde Ogun's 6-yard run with 6:25 left in the second quarter put CNU on top 28-10. Edwards scored his second TD of the game with 2:43 left in the first half, a 2-yard score to cut the lead to 28-17 at the break.
In the third, Mike Vann cut into Christopher Newport's lead with 6:39 left in the third. Slappey missed the PAT and Ferrum trailed 28-23.
Jay Graham scored the final six points for CNU, connecting on a 27-yard field goal with 51 seconds left in the third and a 32-yarder with 5:40 to play in the game for the final margin.
Vann finished with 69 yards on eight carries to pace Ferrum. Matt Dobson had 66 yards on 17 rushes.
Ogun led the Captains as he rushed for a career-high 200 yards on 34 carries and a touchdown. Faison finished 17-of-29 for 188 yards, two TD passes and one interception.
Ferrum finishes 5-5 on the year and 4-3 in the USA South. Christopher Newport concludes 2007 with a record of 7-3 and 6-1 in conference play.
