NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's soccer team remained undefeated in USA South play with a 1-0 win over Methodist Saturday night at Captains Field.
The Captains got on the board in the first half when Kenny Huttman took a free kick just outside the penalty box and wrapped it around the goal from about 20 yards out in the 23rd minute.
The deciding factor was quite possibly Matt Tengs save on a Methodist penalty kick late in the first half after the Captains were called for a foul in the penalty box.
In the second half, both teams had several opportunities to score but the biggest opportunity for the Monarchs came with 8.8 seconds left when CNU whistled for a foul at midfield. One Methodist player took the kick with the rest of the Monarch players, including the goalkeeper lined up for the free kick. After the kick, the ball was headed at the goal and bounced off the crossbar and the post and was finally kicked away by Kenny Huttman as time expired.
Christopher Newport out-shot the Monarchs, 12-7. Tengs finished with three saves in net. The Captains are now 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the USA South. CNU returns to action Wednesday as they host Roanoke at 7 pm.
