GREENSBORO, NC – Christopher Newport's football team scored 42 points in the first half and rolled to a 52-21 victory over Greensboro Saturday night in USA South action.
The Captains Todd Faison set a new school record with five touchdown passes in a game. He also broke the school record for passing yards in a game with 331. Jesse Bradshaw tied the school record for total touchdowns scored in a game with three. Jay Graham's 45-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter also broke the school record. Jonathon Hill connected from 43-yards out against Maryville back in 2005.
There was a lot of scoring between both teams in the first half as they combined for 56 points with CNU taking a 42-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Tunde Ogun put CNU on top with 12:14 left in the first on a 28-yard run. But the Pride responded on its ensuing drive when Mike Caparaso connected with Anthony Williams on a 33-yard touchdown pass to tie the score with 10:07 remaining in the opening quarter.
CNU responded with two straight scores when Faison hit Kazen Burke for a 47-yard touchdown pass. Ogun scored his second TD of the game on a 42-yard pass from Faison with 2:32 left in the first quarter.
Greensboro cut the lead to 21-14 with 1:38 remaining on Torrey Lowe's 90-yard reception. Christopher Newport countered on its ensuing drive when Faison hit Bradshaw for an 80-yard TD pass on the first play to put the Captains ahead 28-14 with 1:26 left in the first.
In the second quarter, Bradshaw scored his second TD of the game, a 17-yard pass from Faison with 11:16 to play in the half. Christopher Newport then went ahead 35-14 with 6:52 to go in the half when Rodney Barnes scooped up a blocked punt and went two yards for a touchdown.
The final score of the half came when the Pride's Matt Martin caught a 12-yard TD pass from Caparaso with 39 ticks to go.
In the second half, CNU held GC scoreless while adding 10 points themselves. Bradshaw's third TD pass was a 15-yarder with 1:06 left in the third and Graham hit the 45-yard field goal with 1:03 left in the game.
CNU finished with 543 yards of total offense, 363 of it through the air.
Mike Thomas led the Captains with 51 yards rushing on six carries. Ogun had 42 yards on six rushes.
Faison finished 19-of-27 for 331 yards and five touchdown passes. Alex Brown was 2-for-5 for 32 yards.
Bradshaw caught eight balls for 168 yards and three scores. Burke had three receptions for 79 yards.
Darnell Walker led GC with 32 yards on 10 carries. Caparaso was 16-of-30 for 230 yards and three touchdowns. Lowe caught six balls for 132 yards.
Christopher Nickle led CNU with eight total tackles, including one sack.
The Captains are now 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the USA South. Greensboro falls to 1-4 on the year and 0-2 in conference action.
Christopher Newport returns home next Saturday as they host Maryville with kick-off set for 1 pm.
