NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's football team remained undefeated in USA South play by defeating Maryville 27-13 Saturday afternoon at POMOCO Stadium.
The Scots got on the board on the first possession of the game on Brad Daniell's 37-yard field goal with 13:18 left in the first quarter.
CNU responded with 13 straight points, beginning with Todd Faison's 34-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Bradshaw with 10:17 remaining in the opening stanza. Mario Barnes' 12-yard TD pass with six seconds left in the first increased the Captains lead to 13-3 as Graham's PAT was blocked.
The Scots would not go quietly as they responded with 10 points of their own to tie the score at 13-13.
Rommell Hightower scampered two yards to cut the lead to three and Daniell kicked his second field goal of the game, a 28-yarder, with 8:37 left in the first half to tie the score 13-13.
Christopher Newport took the lead for good with 24 seconds left in the half on Mike Thomas' three yard run. Graham's kick put the Captains ahead, 20-13.
The only scoring in the second half game on Faison's third touchdown pass of the game, this time to Jake Preli on an 8-yard strike with 10:31 left in the third for the final margin.
Lucas Wall led Maryville going 13-of-35 passing for 116 yards and one interception. Hightower finished with 69 yards on 17 carries.
Faison was 17-of-22 for 208 yards, three TD passes and one pick. Thomas ran for 102 yards on 19 carries. Evan Taylor finished with 53 yards on 12 rushes. Bradshaw caught eight balls for 94 yards.
Maryville falls to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in USA South play. CNU improves to 4-2 on the year and 3-0 in conference action.
The Captains return to play next Saturday when they travel to Methodist with kick-off set for 1 pm.
