GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Christopher Newport sophomore Sara McCaskill shaved three strokes off her personal low and is currently tied for fourth place at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational as she helped lead the Captains on day one of the season-opening tournament. McCaskill fired a one-over 74 while the team signed for a 22-over 314 to sit in fourth place as a team through the first round of action. 

Not all 13 teams in the field were able to finish out the opening round and will the six teams who did not will resume play on Sunday. The second round will then be played with WashU and Randolph-Macon tied for the team lead at six-over par with hosts Denison at 17-over and CNU just 16 strokes back at 22-over par. 

In addition to McCaskill's career low, the Captains also go strong performances from the rest of the squad. Sophomores Maddie Cameron (+4) and Gabi McGehee (+5) are tracking with their classmate in the top-25 on the individual leaderboard while rookie Madeleine Smith (+12) is tied for 40th after her first collegiate round. Rounding out the CNU grouping was junior Taylor Davis (+13) and Cassie Sengul (+13), playing as an individual, who are each tied for 43rd. 

McCaskill started on the first hole and endured a shaky start with three bogeys in the first four holes. From there, though, the second-year star caught fire and stayed at par or better for 11 straight holes including three birdies. She sank a three on the 348-yard par four 8th hole and added two more birdies on the back when she dropped a three on the 293-yard par four 13th and a four on the 426-yard par five 15th. She finished strong with back-to-back pars and closed out her round in a three-way tie for fourth with a 74 (38-36). The CNU sophomore is just three strokes behind tournament leaders Amy Beanblossom (WashU) and Grace Anne Haggerty (Randolph-Macon) at two-under par. 

Cameron and McGehee matched McCaskill with three birdies as well. Cameron also birdied No. 8 on the front nine after pouring in a three on the 233-yard par four 4th hole. After a beautiful tee shot on No. 14, Cameron sank the putt on the 142-yard par three 14th. It was one of just five birdies recorded on the 14th hole on the day. Cameron is tied for 16th at four-over par with a 77. McGehee jumped out to a quick start with par-birdie over her first two holes. She dropped in a three on the 352-yard par four 2nd hole and finished the front nine with four pars. On the back, McGehee attacked the long holes and birdied the 423-yard par five 12th along with the 426-yard par five 15th. The sophomore is five-over so far and tied for 21st. 

Smith had nine pars in her first collegiate round and finished with an 85 (41-44). Davis capped her first round of 2026-27 with a birdie on the 322-yard par four 18th and Sengul added birdie on the 327-yard par four 11th hole.
