Anaya Lozano connected on a game-tying goal with just over ten minutes remaining against the defending national runner-up and eighth-ranked Emory University Eagles on Friday night as the Captains escaped with a 1-1 draw on the road. Lozano's first career goal as a Captain earned CNU a tie and the team improved to 3-1-2 overall this season.
Taking on their second top-ten opponent in three games, the Captains earned the hard-fought result to become the first team to tie the Eagles on their home field since tenth-ranked Rochester snagged a 1-1 tie on November 9, 2024.
Christopher Newport was outshot, 19-5, in the matchup but the margin in shots on-goal was much closer, 5-3. The first shots on frame came in the 25th minute when senior
Amy Sidaway had to stone back-to-back attempts from the Emory attack. Her impressive effort including a stop against All-American Kaitlyn Nimmer that ricocheted outside of the goal to keep the game scoreless.
CNU got their first shot on target when freshman
Caelyn LaFlamme smashed a shot on target in the 32nd minute that was stopped by the Emory goalkeeper. The Captains came out firing in the second half with a pair of runs that were flagged for offsides before
Grace Shifflett managed another shot on frame for the Captains in the 53rd minute.
Despite the mounting effort by the Captains, it was the home team that struck first when Siena Elder snuck in a header off a corner kick from Nimmer. The goal came with less than 25 minutes remaining putting the Captains in a short-time situation.
Pressing forward, the Captains got the equalizer in the 80th minute when Lozano made a move up the left sideline. With one defender in front of her, the junior from Virginia Beach snuck a touch inside and played the ball to the top of the box for a shot with her right foot. From 18 yards out, Lozano smashed a textbook shot over the outstretched hands of the diving goalkeeper and into the back pocket of the netting.
Sidaway needed to make just one more save to secure the draw, snaring a shot out of the air and falling on it in the 85th minute of play. She finished the outing with four saves while completing her sixth straight full-time effort between the pipes this season.
