ATLANTA, Ga. -- Taking on the sixth-ranked Blue Jays from Johns Hopkins University (9-5) on a neutral court in Georgia, the 38th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback on Saturday afternoon. The Captains fall to 6-10 overall this season despite wins from
Kendal Chang and
Eva Taylor in singles play.
Taking on arguably the best doubles unit in Division III, the Captains fell in all three matches but scored two game victories in each of the three pairings. Notably, on the top line, Chang paired with
Kylie Schaefer against the top-ranked tandem in the country, Ava Li and Kamila Wong, and hung tightly with the Hopkins pair before dropping a 6-2 decision. The other two matchups also finished in 6-2 finals, including
Lindsey Bergelina and
Samantha Robertson facing the sixth-ranked tandem in Calire Loftus and Sahana Madala.
In singles play, the Blue Jays clinched the match with the first three wins, but CNU rallied behind Chang and Taylor for a pair of wins. First, Chang took down Sahana Sanjeev at No. 2 in a 6-3, 6-2 final. Then, Taylor oulasted her opponent, Sydney Langer, at No. 3 with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (7) finish.
The Captains are the first Division III team outside of the top-15 teams in the country to score two team points against Johns Hopkins this year. That includes 6-1 wins for the Blue Jays against No. 16 Kenyon and No. 18 Case Western Reserve.
Christopher Newport will return to action at 11:00 am on Sunday as the Captains take on the host and 11th-ranked Emory University Eagles.
