Brookelyn Morrison's Record-Breaking Performance Highlights Historic Outing as No. 22 CNU Women's Lacrosse Tops Meredith, 15-7

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Establishing a new program record for career draw controls, senior All-American Brookelyn Morrison headlined another historic outing by the 22nd-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team as the Captains rolled past Meredith, 15-7, during a non-conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at the Meredith College Athletic Complex.

Against the Avenging Angels, Morrison hauled in a game-high six draw controls, which bumped her career total to 329. That moved her to the top of the school's all-time charts, passing CNU Hall of Famer Meaghan Galvin, who secured 326 from 2014-17.

Along with her work in the middle of the field, Morrison also picked up her 150th career ground ball, becoming just the sixth Captain to reach that benchmark. Meanwhile, on a national level, that performance placed the fourth-year phenom among the sport's most versatile contributors.

Coupled with her 199 career points and 158 caused turnovers, Morrison became only the 29th player in the entire history of Division III lacrosse to record at least 150 points, takeaways, draws, and ground balls.

In addition to Morrison, two other Captains hit career milestones on Saturday. Against Meredith, Faith O'Connor led the victors with seven points, including five goals. Additionally, Elena Sorkin chipped in with four strikes and a pair of assists. With those efforts, both stars reached 100 career points at CNU. O'Connor became the 29th Captain to accomplish the feat after draining a game-tying blast in the middle of the second quarter. Six minutes later, Sorkin joined the club with her fourth point of the first half.

Along with the offensive standouts, Hadley Chadwick pocketed a season-high 11 saves, which equaled her highest total since securing 12 stops during a 14-13 win at Mary Washington on April 22, 2023. The senior also collected her 100th career ground ball, joining former legend Kaitlyn Ready as the only goalies to reach that plateau. Meanwhile, Kate Lamendola notched three caused turnovers against the Avenging Angels, while Sorkin chipped in with a pair.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 10-4 on the season, while the setback dropped Meredith to an identical 10-4 record.

Just two minutes into regulation, CNU landed the first blow of the game. Stationed behind the crease, Kate Webb found Sorkin cutting down the center of the zone. Showing off her precision, the senior caught the flip and uncorked a shot that sliced over the shoulder of a defender before bouncing through the out-stretched legs of the goalie.

Although Meredith retaliated with the next two strikes, the Captains found an answer. On a clear attempt by the hosts, Gabby Saia raced over to confront a midfielder along the left sideline. Eventually, she cut off the streaker and shoved her across the boundary to force a turnover. Taking advantage of the ensuing possession, CNU worked quickly in transition as Sorkin lofted a fadeaway feed to O'Connor, who rolled underneath the defense and snapped a screamer around the hip of the goalie to even the score at two.

After Meredith regained a slim cushion in the middle of the opening period, Christopher Newport responded with a three-goal spurt to close out the stanza. During that stretch, O'Connor completed her first-quarter hat-trick with two late blows, including an acrobatic run from the left alley. On the play, she sidestepped an initial defender and cut around a second Avenging Angel near the crease. With a small lane, the junior bolted inside, cruised over the top of two more defenders, and drove home a dagger on the interior.

Along with O'Connor's efforts, Lamendola added her own slick strike. In the 12th minute, she ran a pick-and-roll in the right alley. Screening a defender at the top of the zone, she spun off her opponent, grabbed a feed from Sorkin, and unleashed a spinning snipe to help take a 5-3 edge.

While the offense was humming along, Morrison was adding her name to the history books. Following a draw in the seventh minute, she tracked down a midfielder from behind. After catching up to her mark, she lowered her shoulder and dislodged the ball before pouncing on the bouncer for her 150th career ground ball.

Less than four minutes later, Morrison made some more history along the center stripe. Off another draw control, Sam Murphy launched a liner in Morrison's direction. Elevating over her opponent, she knocked the floater out of the air before winning a race for the loose ball along the left edge of the circle to secure her record-setting 327th career draw control.

After Christopher Newport wrapped up the first frame on a three-goal run, Meredith answered with a similar rally to regain a 6-5 edge early in the second stanza. However, CNU immediately regrouped on both ends of the field.

On the defensive side, Chadwick dropped to her knees and walled off an eight-meter rip along the right post before gobbling up a hip-high heater near the opposite pipe. Later in the period, three Captains joined forces to stymie another Meredith rally. This time, Saia stonewalled an attacker in the center of the zone, which forced the player to cut back. Perfectly positioned, Morrison was right there to apply pressure from the left side before Murphy scooted in and closed off an escape route at the top of the arc. Completely boxed in, the Avenging Angel eventually ended the play sprawled out on the turf after dropping the ball in the middle of the crowd.

Just as effective on the other side of the field, the offense regained a lead. First, O'Connor evened the score with a fancy fake-and-finish off a flip from Annabella Burke. Then, Morrison broke the deadlock with a missile on the move from the left alley.

Back in control, Christopher Newport stretched its lead just before the break. Shadowing a cutter on the defensive side, Lamendola prevented a pass from connecting on the interior before Lexi Larson scooped up the loose ball and created a fast-break opportunity. Motoring down the turf, the second-year speedster ran right past a Meredith midfielder, crossed the center stripe, and tossed the ball to Sorkin.

After corralling the pass, the senior cut around a defender and skipped a seed through the goalie's five-hole for an 8-6 lead at the end of the first half.

Following the break, CNU continued to extend its advantage. Webb tagged Meredith's defense with a turnaround jumper from the left side before O'Connor split a double-team and avoided a late slide on the way to her final goal. Then, Lamendola added her second strike after dunking over the keeper in the 41st minute, while Brooklynn Peterson squeezed a shot between two defenders, the goalie, and the right pipe to snatch a 12-7 edge.

During the third quarter, the Captains remained vigilant on the back end as well. Laci Welch showed off her speed while winning a race for an errant feed in the right corner. Moments later, Lamendola added a pair of takeaways, including a trail-check to strip an attacker in the right alley. Meanwhile, Chadwick came through with a fantastic stop during a one-on-one showdown after a shooter broke free on a sprint down the center of the zone.

Carrying a five-goal lead into the fourth quarter, Christopher Newport never let Meredith even contemplate a comeback bid with more outstanding defense in the final frame. Saia disrupted a shot and won a scramble for a roller on the Avenging Angels' first rally. Then, on a subsequent surge, Chadwick blocked a low liner before Molly Campbell cut through a crowd and snatched a ground ball while backpedaling away from pressure in the left wing.

Later in the stanza, CNU killed a clear attempt as Burke hounded a defender with tight pressure before deflecting a pass that O'Connor scooped up. Although the hosts managed to cross midfield a little later in the period, Lamendola helped thwart the ensuing surge with a diving strip to punch the ball loose in the right alley before Welch grabbed the roller.

While the defense was keeping a tight lid on Meredith's attack, Christopher Newport added three more goals to put the game on ice. Kicking off the late surge, Peterson posted her second tally after unloading a high-to-high hammer that tucked itself under the crossbar. Then, Sorkin drove home the final two nails after snapping off a sidewinder before polishing off a highlight-reel play in the 57th minute.

During a late rush, Morrison took control in the left alley before finding O'Connor with a no-look feed. After grabbing the ball along the edge of the crease, the junior quickly dropped a dime to Sorkin, who bounced a bullet through two defenders and the goalie to cap off a Tic-Tac-Toe tracer.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 40-20 advantage in shots and a 33-16 lead in ground balls. Meanwhile, Meredith led the way on the draw, 13-12. For the Captains, O'Connor paced the squad with four ground balls, while Webb and Page Henry both had three rollers to go along with a pair of points.

CNU will return to action on Wednesday evening when the team hosts Randolph-Macon at 7 p.m.
