Faith O'Connor's Nine-Point Outburst Leads No. 22 CNU Women's Lacrosse Past Randolph-Macon, 14-11

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Orchestrating a career-best performance, junior Faith O'Connor erupted for nine points, including six goals, while leading the 22nd-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 14-11 victory over Randolph-Macon on a warm Wednesday evening at Jennings Family Stadium.

Against the Yellow Jackets, O'Connor set new personal standards with nine points and three assists. Her six goals also matched her career-high. Especially lethal from the eight-meter arc, she deposited three free-position strikes, which equaled the fourth-most by a Captain in school history.

Along with O'Connor, Brooklynn Peterson registered her third hat-trick of the season, while Elena Sorkin tallied a pair of blows. Brookelyn Morrison also collected her 200th career point with a go-ahead missile in the third quarter. She became just the 11th player in program history to reach that benchmark.

In addition to her offensive exploits, Morrison added four caused turnovers, four draw controls, and five ground balls. Her final roller of the game was her 156th career ground ball, tying former legends Meagan Pfarr and Sally Allstadt for the second-most in school lore.

Gabby Saia was equally productive on the back end with four takeaways and three ground balls of her own. Additionally, Hadley Chadwick chipped in with six saves, including three crucial stops on free-position attempts.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 11-4 on the season, while the setback dropped Randolph-Macon to 10-5.

Trailing 7-5 entering halftime, the Captains regrouped during the break. Getting started quickly in the third period, O'Connor was hounded by a pair of defenders at the top of the zone. After spinning away from the crowd, she gained a little space before finding Peterson, who cut along the crease and scored on the doorstep.

Just two minutes later, CNU pulled even. First, on the defensive end, Morrison deflected a pass in the right alley before plucking the spinner out of the air. After the hosts completed the clear, Kate Lamendola painted the right pipe with an eight-meter rocket, which knotted the score at seven.

Although Randolph-Macon responded in the 37th minute, Christopher Newport landed a counter-punch. Showing off on the other side of the field, Lamendola stonewalled a rush along the restraining line. Eventually, she forced the midfielder into a 20-yard retreat before breaking out an over-the-head check to complete the takeaway.

Taking advantage on the ensuing possession, O'Connor beat a pair of double-teams on a single play. First, she threw on the brakes and circled around a pair of defenders along the edge of the arc. Then, after bursting inside, she barreled straight through two other Yellow Jackets before sinking the equalizer on the interior.

After that point, the visitors tried to find an answer, but CNU built roadblocks all over the field. Saia launched an attacker across the left boundary to stymie a clear attempt before Laci Welch got into the body of a shooter and punched the ball loose at the top of the zone. Later, Chadwick sealed off the right post on an eight-meter attempt before Saia came back with another takeaway check at the end of the stanza.

Meanwhile, the offense gave Christopher Newport its first lead of the second half in the 42nd minute. From the left wing, Kate Webb lofted a pinpoint pass over a defender. On the interior, Morrison made an out-stretched snag on the feed before landing a rip into the top left corner of the cage.

Carrying a 9-8 advantage into the final stanza, CNU quickly put the game away with a fourth-quarter assault. Kicking off the action, Sorkin converted a diving dagger along the crease, while O'Connor drove home a pair of eight-meter strikes, including an acrobatic goal that saw her take a stick to the back while being driven into the turf. Incredibly, she managed to wrap a shot around the ankles of the keeper while tumbling to the ground.

Along with her free-position heroics, O'Connor also found Maddie Lamy sprinting in from the right corner for her third assist before adding a last-minute missile with a bounce shot to cap off the festivities.

Equally impressive on the defensive end, Christopher Newport made several key plays down the stretch to thwart Randolph-Macon's comeback bid. Seconds after the visitor's secured a draw, Sam Murphy stuck with a Yellow Jacket and blasted the ball loose along the center stripe. Then, in the final minute, Saia defended two different players along the crease. After switching off a cutter near the left post, she spun back and broke up a pass that was intended for a different attacker before Lexi Larson came away with the loose ball to kill the final threat.

Overall, CNU held a 32-20 advantage in shots and a 20-15 lead in ground balls. Meanwhile, Randolph-Macon held a slim 14-13 advantage on the draw.

In the first half, the Captains got off to a quick start. O'Connor scored back-to-back goals in the opening moments of regulation before assisting on a blast by Peterson. Showing off her full skill set, the junior also contributed a pair of early takeaways, including a nice strip along the right boundary during a failed clear.

Along with O'Connor's efforts, Page Henry set up a screamer by Sorkin, which helped CNU grab a 4-3 lead at the end of the opening period.

In the second stanza, Peterson chipped in with her second goal after snapping a shot around the hip of the keeper following a feed from Webb. Meanwhile, the defense was equally effective.

During the period, Chadwick stopped two free-position attempts, including a slick stop on a bouncer in the 24th minute. Saia also came down with a leaping interception on the back end, while Elle Roberts applied tight pressure on a midfielder to prevent a pass from connecting on a failed clear.

Unfortunately, Randolph-Macon continued to attack throughout the period and eventually found some rhythm before stealing a 7-5 lead entering the break. However, Christopher Newport shrugged off the momentary stumble and responded with an electric second-half to steal the come-from-behind victory.

CNU will return to action on Saturday when the Captains host Mary Washington in a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference battle at noon.
