NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Putting together one of the most well-balanced assaults in program history, 20 different Captains registered at least one point, while a dozen scored a goal as the second-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team knocked off Ohio Northern, 20-6, on a cloud-covered Sunday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.
At the forefront of the attack,
Jamie Smith matched his career-high with eight points, while his seven goals equaled the fifth-highest total in program history.
Ryan Miller also secured his second career hat-trick, and
Kevin Miller handed out four assists.
In addition to the high-volume standouts, four Captains posted their first career point during the contest. Among that group,
Blaise Coley and
Brendan Medearis both landed strikes in the fourth quarter,
Danny Kaplan dropped a dime in the final minutes of regulation, and
Armer Harrison flashed his hands with a slick assist in the opening period.
Equally effective on the defensive end,
Brett Kelley had five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while
Jackson Shaw,
AJ Rosacker, and
Colin DeGrassi had two strips apiece. Meanwhile, between the pipes,
Mason Bellinger secured eight saves,
Declan McCulloch collected a pair,
Connor Pinto added his first career stop, and
Aidan Tuzik closed out the festivities with two minutes of pristine action.
CNU also dominated possession during the 60-minute masterclass. The hosts won 22 of the game's 28 faceoffs, including a 10-for-15 performance by
Grant Giunchi and a 7-for-8 effort by
Zach Ward.
Conner Derogatis and
Josh Pope combined to win all five of their battles as well.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 9-0 on the season and punctuated a perfect six-game homestand. On the other side, the setback dropped Ohio Northern to 3-3.
Setting the tone from the very beginning, Shaw added the game's first highlight with a bruising takeaway on a clear attempt by the Polar Bears. Trying to weave through traffic, an Ohio Northern midfielder grabbed possession before cutting towards the center of the field.
Holding his ground, Shaw stood tall and never gave an inch. Eventually, the junior lowered his shoulder and unloaded a violent check that dislodged the ball and sent the Polar Bear spinning to the turf. Quickly capitalizing,
Jayden Hardnett pounced on the roller and fed it to Smith, who converted in transition for the game's opening tally.
With an early lead, Christopher Newport piled on. During another fast-break opportunity, Harrison showed off his stick skills while snatching a flip with his long pole along the left post. In a flash, he tossed the ball to
Ryan Miller, who landed a rocket on the run for his first tally.
Later, Miller came back and ran a successful give-and-go with his older brother, while Smith chipped in with two more darts, including a buzzer-beater off a feed from
Ryan Traynor, which handed the hosts a 5-0 lead at the end of the opening stanza.
Just as dominant on the other side of the field, Rosacker got underneath the hands of an attacker and capitalized on a stick-lift for his first takeaway before Shaw and DeGrassi sandwiched another Polar Bear in the left alley. Shortly thereafter, Kelley and
Mark Davison joined forces on a successful double-team along the end line, while
Will Cramp clubbed the ball loose in the right wing.
In the second quarter, the defense continued its showcase. Early on, Kelley pieced together a sensational slide along the crease. Eventually, he tied up an attacker and unloaded a lethal check that separated the Polar Bear from the ball and his own glove.
Later in the period, Rosacker also completed a perfect over-the-head check to strip an attacker, while
Kevin Miller peppered a defender with a series of checks to help prevent a successful clear.
Meanwhile, on the offensive end, Smith landed three goals in the period, including another highlight-reel performance. After securing a flip from
Ryan Miller, he found himself surrounded by three long poles near the right post. Navigating his way through the jungle, he managed to keep possession, wiggle free, and burn a blast into the top left corner of the cage.
In addition to Smith's efforts, Shaw buried a one-timer from the top of the zone. Then, Hardnett capitalized on a fast-break off a faceoff victory,
Randolph Campbell sank a jumper along the right pipe, and
Ethan Slusher drove home a quick-hitter while stationed near the opposite post.
Holding a 12-4 lead entering halftime, Christopher Newport continued to shine after the break. Once again, Smith put on a clinic while flashing a well-rounded skill set.Â
In the first five minutes of the third quarter, Smith assisted on a worm-burner by
Ryan Miller before landing his seventh goal with a high heater from the left alley. Then, on a clear attempt by the visitors, he tracked down a Polar Bear and unleashed a trail-check that sent the defender's stick spinning into the air while forcing a turnover.
Along with Smith's work,
Jackson Platner uncorked a man-up missile in the 39th minute, which locked up a 15-4 lead entering the final stanza.Â
During the fourth quarter, some of the younger Captains had an opportunity to shine. Coley blistered an off-hip hammer from the right alley for his first goal. Then, during a clear, Medearis put a Polar Bear in the spin cycle before rolling back to his left and launching a one-timer that kissed off the pipe and tucked itself into the top left corner of the cage.
Later,
Brady Mitchell showed off remarkable balance to stay out of the crease while absorbing a blow to the back and scoring along the left post. Then, Traynor capitalized on a second-chance opportunity with a tracer from the top of the zone before
Luke Solomon smoked a step-down snipe from the left alley for the squad's final tally.
Meanwhile, on the other end, CNU kept a tight lid on Ohio Northern's attack.
James Earls blocked a shot after eating a point-blank blast with his body. Moments later,
Keegan Smith stripped a Polar Bear behind the cage, while
Karson Seth pressured a midfielder into an errant pass to help wrap up the action.
Overall, Christopher Newport held a 58-24 advantage in shots and a 52-19 lead in ground balls. Giunchi led the way with six rollers, while DeGrassi, Cramp, Hardnett, and
Jed Pellicano all had three apiece.
CNU will return to action on March 13 with an 11 a.m. showdown against No. 5 Lynchburg on the first day of the Mustang Classic in Owings Mills, Maryland.
