OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- In a game featuring a series of wild momentum swings, the second-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team dug its way out of a six-goal hole in the second half, but the Captains could not quite complete their comeback bid as No. 4 Lynchburg held on for a 22-21 victory on Friday during the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic at Stevenson University's Mustang Stadium.
Trailing 16-10 with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter, CNU mounted an incredible rally. Scoring seven of the next eight goals, the Captains knotted the score at 17 early in the fourth quarter. Later, the squad squeaked out to a pair of late leads, including a 21-20 advantage with three minutes remaining in regulation.
Unfortunately, Lynchburg managed to score the final two goals, including the clinching blow with 31 seconds left in the contest, to wrap up the back-and-forth battle.
Leading the way on the offensive end,
Jamie Smith collected seven points, including six goals.
Kevin Miller also added half-a-dozen points, including three assists, while
Ryan Miller notched four goals of his own. Rounding out the high-volume scorers,
Randolph Campbell and
Jackson Platner had two strikes apiece.
With the setback, Christopher Newport fell to 9-1 on the season, while Lynchburg improved to 5-0.
After the Hornets orchestrated a four-goal surge in the middle of the third quarter to take a 16-10 lead, CNU fired back. During a three-minute assault, the Captains pieced together their own four-goal run. Smith drained a pair of shots during that stretch, including a topside tracer from the left side and a second strike from the doorstep after
Jude MacLean wrestled possession away from the keeper behind the crease.
Along with Smith's heroics,
Ryan Miller skipped a seed through the goalie from the top of the zone, while
Kevin Miller broke out a swim move to spin through a pole in the right alley before hammering home a high heater.
After Lynchburg's 17th goal,
Kevin Miller added to his highlight reel just before the end of the period. Rolling to his left, he uncorked a no-look, behind-the-back feed to Smith, who was sprinting in the opposite direction. After securing the pass, the senior All-American whistled a one-timer to cut the Hornets' lead down to 17-15 entering the fourth frame.
Keeping the momentum early in the final stanza,
Ryan Miller dove along the crease and snapped a shot around the ankles of the goalie before his older brother muscled through a defender and dropped in the equalizer from the right wing.
Although Lynchburg momentarily regained a slim cushion, Platner put on a show. The sophomore All-American assisted on a strike by
Ryan Miller and added two goals of his own during a four-minute frenzy. His final blast, which was a slick high-to-low hammer from the left alley, gave the Captains their first lead since the second quarter with a 20-19 edge.
Later, on the defensive side,
AJ Rosacker popped a ball loose during a scrum in front of the crease. Trying to corral the roller, a crowd gathered on the doorstep next to the cage. Eventually, a Hornet slipped out of the melee and ripped a pointblank blast, but
Mason Bellinger made a momentum-saving stop.
Although Lynchburg was eventually able to knot the score at 20,
Grant Giunchi won the clamp on the ensuing faceoff. After pushing forward, he faced a double-team and smartly shoveled the ball back to
Garrett Bralley.
Settling in for a 6-on-6 possession,
Kevin Miller eventually dropped a dime to Smith, who carried two defenders towards the crease before firing a missile on the move for a 21-20 lead with three minutes remaining in regulation.
Unfortunately, the opposition was undeterred. Less than a minute after Smith's go-ahead goal, Lynchburg connected on the equalizer. Then, after CNU came away empty-handed on its ensuing possession, the Hornets converted on the other end with 31 seconds remaining to wrap up a wild 22-21 win.
Overall, Lynchburg held a 50-43 advantage in shots and a 40-19 edge in ground balls. The Hornets also won 36 of the game's 47 faceoffs.
In a game featuring two teams that entered the contest earning first-place votes in the USILA National Coaches Poll, both squads found their rhythm early. In the first period, Campbell buried a bullet into the top left corner of the cage to open the scoring before
Ethan Slusher sank an underhanded scoop shot off a feed from Smith. Later, the Hornets slipped out to a 3-2 advantage before the Captains orchestrated an answer.
In less than five minutes, CNU slapped four straight goals on the board.
Fred Fulkerson converted a fake-and-finish along the left post before Smith drained a screamer from the wing. Shortly thereafter, MacLean snapped a sidewinder underneath the outstretched stick of a long pole before Smith went with some high heat to steal a 6-3 edge.
Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Bellinger pocketed a save from his knees and completed a successful clear with a pinpoint, 50-yard rocket off his back leg while being pressured in the crease.
Colin DeGrassi also peppered an attacker with a series of checks along the baseline, which forced a turnover during an early rush by Lynchburg.
Later,
Caden Cunningham put together a solid defensive stand. First, he drilled a Hornet along the right sideline to disrupt an initial push. Then, he bolted behind the crease and helped tie up a second attacker, which allowed Bellinger to snag a loose ball off an errant shot.
Although Lynchburg eventually pulled back within one after dropping in two straight tallies at the end of the stanza, CNU regrouped entering the second period.
On the offensive end, Platner set a screen that stopped a defender in his tracks before
Kevin Miller slipped over the crowd and sent a shot through the goalie's five-hole. Minutes later,
Brett Kelley completed a clear up the right sideline before notching a pole goal with a bouncer from close range.
Just as effective on the defensive side, Kelley and
Will Cramp joined forces on a successful double-team that led to an off-target pass near the left post. Bralley also won a runout with a diving play along the right sideline before blocking a shot during a late surge by the Hornets.
Unfortunately, the tide began to turn later in the quarter. Battling back, Lynchburg notched five consecutive goals to steal a 10-8 lead entering halftime. Following the break, the squad continued its attack and grabbed a four-goal edge after capitalizing on its first two offensive possessions.
Needing to regroup, Campbell buzzed a backhand bullet into the upper 90 before
Ryan Miller spun through a defender and unleashed a man-up missile from the right wing, which cut the deficit back down to two. Sadly, Lynchburg regained a six-goal cushion later in the period, and although the Captains rallied from behind, the Hornets held on for the victory.
Along with his goal, Kelley added two takeaways and a pair of ground balls, while Bellinger finished with 13 saves in the cage.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday when the squad squares off with No. 1 Tufts at 3:30 p.m.
