Third-Quarter Rally Not Quite Enough as CNU Women's Lacrosse Falls at No. 11 Washington and Lee, 15-9

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Facing a five-goal deficit entering halftime, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team pieced together a valiant effort in the third quarter and pulled within two on multiple occasions, but No. 11 Washington and Lee battled back and grabbed a 15-9 victory on Wednesday evening at Watt Field.

Headlining the comeback bid, Kate Lamendola and Faith O'Connor both scored twice in the third stanza. Eventually, O'Connor finished the contest with three goals, which marked her fourth consecutive hat-trick. With her early-season surge, she became the first Captain to open a year with four straight hat-tricks since former legend Erin Callahan kicked off the 2014 campaign with an equally lethal stretch.

Brookelyn Morrison also filled up the stat sheet with two goals, five draw controls, and four caused turnovers. Equally effective on the defensive end, freshman Sam Murphy chipped in with a pair of takeaways. Coupled with her earlier work against Berry, Roanoke, and St. Mary's (Md.), Murphy became just the third Captain in school history to open a season with multiple strips in each of the squad's first four games.

Murphy's streak of four consecutive outings with at least two caused turnovers also matches the longest stretch by a Captain at any point during a season since former legend Julia Golden ran off five straight from February 27 - March 16, 2019.

On the back end, Hadley Chadwick also starred between the pipes while notching a season-high eight saves against the high-powered Washington and Lee attack.

With the setback, CNU dropped to 3-1 on the season, while the victory bumped the Generals to 4-2.

Early on, Washington and Lee vaulted out to a quick lead after sinking four straight goals in the first five minutes of regulation. Looking for a response, CNU called a timeout and regrouped during the break. After the stoppage, the visitors clamped down on the defensive end. Murphy forced a turnover on back-to-back rallies, while Chadwick snatched a pair of saves to keep the Generals from stretching their advantage.

Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the field, the offense found its rhythm from the eight-meter arc. Morrison kicked off the late wave with the squad's first strike in the 10th minute before O'Connor followed with her own free-position bullet to slice the deficit down to 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Stealing back some of the momentum in the second stanza, the hosts took advantage of a pair of power play situations to regain a four-goal cushion before CNU fired back. First, on the defensive side, Chadwick notched a pair of saves, including a huge stop on a free-position attempt. Then, Elena Sorkin found some space on the offensive end with her first goal to trim W&L's lead down to 6-3.

Trading blows, Washington and Lee shot right back with the final two tallies of the first half to secure an 8-3 edge entering the break.

Staring at a five-goal hole, Christopher Newport never backed down. In the third period, the visitors went on the attack. Carving up the opposition with a relentless assault, Lamendola posted two straight tallies, including an eight-meter missile and a rocket off a feed from Sorkin. Then, after Chadwick shut down W&L's response, O'Connor landed her second blow of the contest to pull the Captains within two at 8-6.

After the Generals retaliated, O'Connor completed her hat-trick and kept the deficit at two with a dart in the 38th minute.

With their lead in doubt for the first time since early in the first quarter, the hosts found an answer. In less than a minute of action, Washington and Lee slapped two goals on the board to gain some extra wiggle room. Although Molly Campbell converted on a second-chance opportunity off a feed from O'Connor, the Captains entered the fourth quarter facing an 11-8 deficit.

Unfortunately, Christopher Newport could not pull any closer during the final frame. Putting the game out of reach, the Generals scored three straight goals at the start of the period before Morrison capped off her evening with one last eight-meter strike. After that point, the hosts collected one final tally with four minutes left in regulation to wrap up the 15-9 win.

Overall, Washington and Lee held a 30-21 advantage in shots and an 18-13 lead in ground balls. The Generals also controlled 16 of the game's 26 draws. Along with Morrison's five draw controls, Murphy pocketed a pair, while O'Connor, Emilie Shoults, and Brooklynn Peterson had one each. Meanwhile, on the back end, Gabby Saia caused a turnover in the fourth quarter, while Lexi Larson corralled a key ground ball that helped jump-start a rally, which resulted in O'Connor's final goal.

CNU will return to action on Saturday when the Captains kick off a three-game homestand beginning at 1 p.m. against Lynchburg.
