NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Capitalizing on a slew of historic efforts during a well-rounded showcase, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team took down Lynchburg, 17-10, during a non-conference battle on a sensational Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.
Leading the way on the defensive side,
Gabby Saia established a new personal-best with seven caused turnovers. That also equaled the fourth-highest single-game total in program history.
Equally effective on the back end,
Sam Murphy added another chapter to her historic freshman campaign. The first-year phenom posted three takeaways, which marked her fifth consecutive game with multiple strips. With that performance, she became just the second Captain in program history to register at least two caused turnovers in five straight outings during a single campaign. In that exclusive club, she joined former legend Julia Golden, who accomplished the feat from February 27 through March 16, 2019.
Meanwhile, across multiple seasons, Murphy's current stretch is tied for the second-longest run by a Captain. Teammate
Kate Lamendola had two takeaways in six straight appearances from May 12, 2024 through March 1, 2025.
Among other stars on Saturday,
Brookelyn Morrison posted a game-high 12 draw controls, which matched the eighth-highest total by a Captain. Coupled with her 14-draw performance at Roanoke on April 5, 2025, she became just the fourth Captain to record at least a dozen draws on two separate occasions. Former standouts Emma Jackson, Syd Guidi, and Sam Wettengel also had a pair of similar efforts.
On the offensive end of the field,
Kate Webb set a new career-high with seven points, including four assists.
Elena Sorkin and
Faith O'Connor also had four goals apiece. With her eruption, O'Connor notched her fifth straight hat-trick, becoming just the third player in school history to open a season with at least three goals in each of the team's first five games. Previously, CNU Hall of Famer Ashton Marshall had five straight hat-tricks to begin the 2013 campaign, while former great Erin Callahan had an identical run just one year later.
With the victory, the Captains improved to 4-1 on the season, while the setback handed the Hornets their first loss of the year. Lynchburg now sits at 4-1 as well.
Storming out to an early lead, Christopher Newport slapped five goals on the board in the opening stanza. Webb kicked off the scoring with a slick strike off a second-chance opportunity. Less than two minutes into regulation, she had a pass broken up on the interior but stayed with the play and recovered the loose ball. Back in control, she snapped a screamer over the head of the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Continuing the attack, O'Connor joined the party three minutes later. Sprinting through traffic on the inside, she caught a flip from Sorkin, slammed on the brakes, and cut back to her right. With the defense struggling to keep up, she blasted a high heater under the crossbar for her first goal of the contest.
After setting up O'Connor's strike, Sorkin found her groove. First, she made a leaping snag to corral a high pass before snapping off a sidewinder around the hip of a defender. Then, the senior ran a nice give-and-go with
Page Henry, who completed the play with a turnaround tracer on the doorstep.
Finally, in the final moments of the first period, Sorkin capped off her assault by splitting a pair of Hornets in the left alley before sinking a high-to-high hammer, which handed the hosts a 5-2 lead.
Equally effective on the defensive side, Sorkin wrestled possession away from a midfielder on a failed clear before Murphy came through with two takeaways, including a textbook interception at the top of the zone. Shortly thereafter, Morrison tied up a shooter and blocked a rip on the interior before picking off another stalled clear attempt along the left sideline.
Still blanketing the field in the second stanza, Murphy poked the ball away from a Hornet with a stick-check at the top of the arc before Saia ripped possession away from another attacker along the right post.
Hadley Chadwick also stoned a difficult high-to-low laser before trapping the rebound in the crease.
Meanwhile, the attack never lost its rhythm. Picking apart the opposition, Webb set up back-to-back bullets by Murphy and
Brooklynn Peterson before notching her second strike with a dart from close range. Additionally, Sorkin collected a pair of goals, including an eight-meter missile, while
Annabella Burke slipped a pinpoint feed underneath the stick of a defender before Morrison capitalized on the right side.
Rounding out the first-half fireworks, O'Connor sidestepped one Hornet and bounced off another defender before connecting on her second tally, which helped give the hosts a 12-4 lead.
Following the break, Saia pieced together a defensive clinic during the third period. Although the Captains were unable to find an opening on the offensive end, Saia suffocated the competition on the other side.
Kicking off her highlight-reel run, she buried an attacker in the turf after stonewalling a run along the crease. Later, she picked off an errant pass on the interior, beat a Hornet in a footrace for a loose ball on the right sideline, and won a physical altercation with another opponent during a shorthanded situation while popping the ball free near the left pipe.
Although the visitors were eventually able to cut their deficit down to three early in the fourth quarter. Christopher Newport brushed aside the comeback bid. Setting the tone, Saia added one final takeaway in the 48th minute. This time, she prevented an attacker from catching a pass near the cage. After the ball skipped off the turf, she punched the roller away from the Hornet, shoveled it past a second midfielder, and won a sprint to the right sideline to regain possession.
Taking advantage just seconds later, O'Connor cut around a defender on a run towards the crease before sinking her third goal of the contest.
After regaining some momentum, Christopher Newport cruised to the victory. Headlining a late onslaught, Webb set up a goal by
Drew Stanley before converting a turnaround jumper from the left wing. Then, Lamendola scored on a rush from the right alley before O'Connor drove home the final nail with a minute left in regulation to lock up the 17-10 triumph.
Overall, CNU held a 38-22 lead in shots and an 18-13 advantage in ground balls. Along with her three takeaways, Murphy picked up five rollers, while
Jess Hulse collected four of her own. Meanwhile, the hosts also controlled 20 of the 29 draws, including four by
Emilie Shoults.
Excellent in the crease, Chadwick also pocketed five saves to secure the victory.
The Captains will return to action on Wednesday when they host Haverford at 4 p.m.
