Veterans Shine on Senior Day as No. 4 CNU Men's Lacrosse Rolls Past Stockton, 12-3, during Defensive Masterpiece

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Putting on a clinic on the defensive side of the ball, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team suffocated the high-powered Stockton attack as the Captains toppled the Ospreys, 12-3, in the Coastal Lacrosse Conference opener on a windy Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.

Headlining the defensive masterclass, senior All-American Mason Bellinger matched his career-high with 20 saves, which also equaled the third-most by a Captain in program history. Incredibly, his performance came just seven days after he posted his first 20-save showcase during a win against No. 14 Amherst last week.

Along with Bellinger's work in the crease, CNU picked up 19 caused turnovers during the 60-minute battle. Fittingly, nine of those takeaways came from senior members of the team. Fifth-year standout Colin DeGrassi had two strips for the Captains, while fourth-year phenoms Rory Keverline and Chris Lewis matched that performance.

In addition to Keverline and Lewis, Ryan Almassian, AJ Rosacker, and Tyler Yang also had a takeaway after participating in the program's Senior Day ceremony before the contest. Rosacker's caused turnover was the 92nd of his career, tying former legend Teddy Pekalski for the second-most by an LSM in school history.

Overall, the three goals surrendered by the Captains equaled the fewest by an opponent since Mary Washington dropped a 24-1 decision on April 23, 2022. Adding another layer to Saturday's performance, Stockton came into the contest boasting the nation's 15th-ranked scoring offense. The Ospreys were averaging 15.30 goals per game before their trip to Newport News.

On the opposite end of the field, senior All-American Jamie Smith posted a hat-trick for the Captains, while fifth-year star John Santoro helped punctuate the festivities with a second-half strike.

Among the younger members of the team, Kevin Miller chipped in with six points, including four assists. His second helper of the game was the 150th of his career. He became just the second Captain to reach that benchmark, joining All-American Coby Auslander, who set the school record with 161 assists from 2020-24.

Jackson Platner also erupted for his first hat-trick of the season, while Jackson Shaw posted a pair of first-quarter tallies. Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Brett Kelley led the Captains with three caused turnovers while hauling in four ground balls. Grant Giunchi also secured four rollers and won eight of his 12 faceoff attempts.

With the win, Christopher Newport improved to 11-2 on the season, including 1-0 in Coastal Lacrosse Conference action. The setback dropped Stockton to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Right from the start, the Captains found their rhythm. Less than 90 seconds into regulation, Daniel Siaton set a screen in the right alley, which allowed Shaw to slip over top of the defense and snap off the game's first goal. Moments later, Platner skipped a shot inside the right post before Shaw capitalized on a quick outlet by Bellinger to score in transition, which handed the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Just as effective on the defensive side, Ryan Miller killed off a pair of clears, including a slick slap-check along the right sideline. DeGrassi also stripped a cutter in the middle of the zone, and Lewis buried an attacker with a takeaway in the right alley. Shortly thereafter, Keverline and Kelley teamed up on a successful double-team along the crease, which helped stymie Stockton's final surge of the opening period.

With time winding down on the first quarter, Kevin Miller picked off a failed clear attempt near the center stripe before finding Smith for a fast-break goal, which resulted in a 4-0 advantage.

In the second period, Christopher Newport continued to flip defense into offense. Early in the stanza, Kelley came through with a trail-check to steal possession from a midfielder. After grabbing the roller, he generated an unsettled situation on the other side of the field, which ended with a high-to-low hammer by Smith.

Still motoring along, Kevin Miller unleashed a long-range rip from the right alley before Platner spun past a defender and sank a lefty laser from the top of the zone.

Although the visitors eventually cracked the scoreboard with their first goal of the game, the defense quickly clamped down again. DeGrassi flashed his stick skills with a deflection in traffic before Keverline bodied up an attacker and pushed him off his mark, which led to an off-target shot. Moments later, Kelley and DeGrassi planted another shooter in the turf to force a shot-clock violation, while Bellinger snatched a high heater during a man-down situation, which kept the 7-1 lead entering halftime.

Following the break, Bellinger continued his masterpiece. He pocketed six more stops in the third stanza, including a kick save during a fast-break opportunity and a stick-side snag on another elevated missile. Additionally, Keverline tied up an attacker and dropped him to the turf during a rush near the left post, while Rosacker shut down a clear attempt after forcing an errant pass with tight pressure in the middle of the field.

Meanwhile, on the offensive side, Christopher Newport never lost its rhythm. Ryan Miller split a pair of defenders and launched a missile from the right wing before dropping a dime to Platner, who came through with a fake-and-finish near the pipe. Then, in the 36th minute, Santoro chased down an errant pass that nearly slipped across midfield. After securing the roller, he burned a long pole, cruised back towards the zone, and fired a worm-burner from the right side.

With little left to prove, Kevin Miller capitalized on a dip-and-dunk along the doorstep before assisting on Smith's third blast of the game.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 12-2 lead, CNU put the game away with a series of defensive highlights during the final stanza. Kicking things off, an attacker attempted to evade Yang, but the senior stuck with his opponent and got his stick underneath the Osprey's arm. Although his man tried to spin back to the left, Yang lifted him off the turf and wrenched the ball free before dropping the attacker back on the ground.

On the next series, Bellinger polished off his afternoon. He walled off the right post with a stop from his knees on a low liner. Later, on the same possession, he jumped back on his feet and stoned a high rip from close range before adding a sensational stop during a one-on-one showdown after a shooter slipped free along the crease.

Later in the period, Almassian helped force a shot-clock violation after putting together a tight ride in the right alley before stealing a pass from another attacker near the baseline. Then, Lewis stayed with an Osprey through a series of dodges along the right post before causing an errant pass before Karson Seth broke up a feed on Stockton's final offensive stand, which locked up the 12-3 win.

Overall, the Ospreys held a 44-38 advantage in shots, while CNU won 11 of the game's 19 faceoffs and led the way in ground balls, 39-38.

Christopher Newport will return to action on April 1 with a 4 p.m. showdown at Mary Washington.
