NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In a game that featured 13 ties and seven lead changes, the 19th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team came up just short in the end as the Captains dropped a hard-fought 20-16 decision to Washington (Md.) on a chilly Wednesday evening at Jennings Family Stadium.
Putting together an edge-of-your-seat thriller, the two teams engaged in an epic back-and-forth battle. In the second half, CNU secured a 13-12 lead in the third quarter and fought to a 15-15 tie in the fourth period, but Washington (Md.) orchestrated a late five-goal spurt to grab control of the contest and walk away with the win.
Despite the setback, several Captains made history during the 60-minute showcase.
Faith O'Connor came up with her ninth hat-trick of the season, which also marked her 13th consecutive multi-goal effort dating back to last season. That tied the longest run by a player in program history, originally accomplished by CNU Hall of Famer Ashton Marshall from February 16 - March 30, 2013 and matched by former standout Syd Guidi from March 20 - May 18, 2024.
Along with O'Connor's work,
Brookelyn Morrison stuffed the stat sheet with four goals, four caused turnovers, and eight draw controls while reaching a pair of career milestones. During the game, the senior All-American recorded her 300th career draw, joining CNU Hall of Famer Meaghan Galvin as the only Captains to reach that benchmark. Galvin set the school record with 326 from 2014-17.
In addition to her 300th draw, Morrison also picked up her 150th career takeaway, becoming just the 52nd player in Division III history to accomplish that feat.
Among other standouts on the offensive end,
Elena Sorkin led Christopher Newport with six points, including four strikes.
Annabella Burke also collected her first career multi-goal effort and matched her season-high with three points. Fellow freshman
Brooklynn Peterson landed a pair of blows as well.
On the defensive side, CNU came through with 18 takeaways, including five by
Molly Campbell.
Gabby Saia also caused three turnovers, while Sorkin,
Lexi Larson, and
Kate Lamendola had two strips apiece. Meanwhile, between the pipes,
Hadley Chadwick secured five saves, including the 400th of her career. She joined longtime legends Kaitlyn Ready, Gayle Robinson, and Hanna Slough as the only Captains to reach that milestone.
With the setback, Christopher Newport fell to 8-2 on the season, while the win bumped Washington (Md.) to 7-2.
In a game featuring a series of historic efforts, O'Connor kicked off the festivities with a run for the record books. After securing the opening draw, the junior juggernaut burst down the center of the field, cruised right past a defender, and landed the game's first tally just 10 seconds into regulation. That marked the second-earliest strike in school history, trailing only a nine-second bolt by Becca Geist that kicked off a win against Agnes Scott on April 3, 2010.
Following O'Connor's early blitz, Lamendola joined the fun with a goal after shaking the defense with a devastating cut at the top of the zone. Moments later, Peterson blistered a rip inside the right post, while Sorkin fired a seed through the keeper to snatch a 4-2 lead midway through the opening period.
Just as effective on the defensive side, Larson posted an out-stretched interception in the right alley before Morrison came down with a leaping pick on a failed clear at midfield. Later, Campbell kicked off her afternoon with a slick trail-check to strip an attacker, while Saia baited the opposition into an errant feed with tight pressure along the baseline.
Meanwhile, in the crease, Chadwick recorded back-to-back saves during a 20-second surge by the visitors. First, she grabbed a hip-high attempt along the right post before making a stick-side snag near the opposite pipe.
Although Washington (Md.) continued to push forward and eventually slipped out to a 5-4 lead, CNU retaliated before the end of the opening stanza. Lifting up the squad with two straight bullets, O'Connor took control. In the 14th minute, she sidestepped a defender, pushed down the center, avoided three more Shorewomen, and sank a blast while tiptoeing along the crease.
Less than 30 seconds later, she secured a flip from Sorkin and dropped in a high hammer to regain a 6-5 advantage at the end of the period.
Continuing the seesaw affair, Washington (Md.) opened the second stanza with three consecutive goals before CNU answered. On a clear attempt by the visitors, Sorkin stood up a defender along the center stripe before popping the ball out. In a perfect position, Burke grabbed the bouncer and stormed right to the cage before capitalizing on the fast-break opportunity.
One minute later, Burke evened the score at eight after depositing a free-position shot inside the right post.
On the other end of the field, Christopher Newport clamped down on three straight rallies by the opposition. Larson forced an attacker into a five-yard retreat in the right alley before ripping the ball away. Then, Campbell picked off a roller along the sideline, while Saia intercepted a high heave in the left alley to thwart a separate rush.
Although the Shorewomen were eventually able to register three late goals, the Captains matched them blow-for-blow. Sorkin skipped a shot underneath the keeper before Peterson peppered the top right corner of the cage with an eight-meter missile. Then, Burke dropped low and used a sidearm flip to slip a pass below the stick of a defender, which led to a fast blast by Morrison.
With the game knotted at 11 entering the second half, both teams continued to find openings in the third period.
Kate Webb dropped a dime to Morrison, who broke out a quick-stick to flick the ball past the keeper. Then, Sorkin drained another five-hole heater, while Morrison came back with her third goal after capitalizing on a takeaway by Campbell, which tied the score at 14.
Among other highlights on the defensive end, Lamendola had two straight strips, including tight defense against a cutter on the interior, which prevented a pass from connecting along the crease. Saia also put together a fabulous run early in the period. The junior blocked an initial shot on the inside. Although Washington (Md.) regained possession, she eventually drove the attacker towards the right sideline before dropping the hammer to complete a takeaway near the boundary.
Despite the defensive efforts by CNU, the visitors were able to steal a 15-14 lead at the end of the third quarter. Looking for a response, the Captains kicked off the final frame with outstanding work on both ends of the field.
First, on the defensive side, Morrison stripped a cutter with a trail-check, while Campbell and Burke pinched off a midfielder on a failed clear during a shorthanded situation. After the strip, Campbell connected with Sorkin, who bounced a bullet into the back of the cage to even the score at 15.
Unfortunately, Christopher Newport could not quite grab the lead. Finding a second wind, Washington (Md.) drained five straight goals during the middle of the stanza to take a 20-15 lead.
Still battling, Sorkin caused another failed clear with tight pressure near the center stripe in the 57th minute. Working quickly, she eventually found Morrison, who circled around a defender in the left alley before dropping in CNU's 16th goal.
Sadly, with the clock working against them, the Captains did not have enough time to continue their comeback bid as the visitors held on for a 20-16 win.
During the contest, Christopher Newport held a 32-30 advantage in shots, while Washington (Md.) had a 17-14 edge in ground balls. Meanwhile, both squads secured 19 draw controls. Along with Morrison's eight snags in the center of the field, O'Connor pocketed five draws, while Murphy notched a pair.
CNU will return to action on Saturday with a noon test at No. 10 Denison.
