GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Despite another electric performance by
Elena Sorkin, the 19th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team could not quite keep pace with No. 10 Denison as the Captains dropped a 16-7 decision to the Big Red on Saturday afternoon at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
During the top-25 tilt, Sorkin pieced together an offensive clinic while matching her career-high with five goals, including three during a breathtaking assault at the end of the third quarter. Her five tallies equaled the second-most against a top-10 opponent in program history.
Sorkin's eruption also marked her second five-goal effort against a nationally-ranked squad in the past three weeks after she was equally lethal against No. 23 Haverford on March 11. Incredibly, she became just the sixth Captain in school history to register at least five goals against two different top-25 teams, joining CNU Hall of Famer Kaitlin Quigley as well as longtime legends Sarah Culver, Zoe Dyer, Julia Iapicca, and Cat Leighty.
On the defensive end,
Brookelyn Morrison came through with three caused turnovers, while
Hadley Chadwick gobbled up 10 saves. Meanwhile, Morrison and
Megan Rotzler both had four draw controls for the Captains.Â
With the setback, Christopher Newport fell to 8-3 on the season, while Denison improved to 8-1.
Although the hosts slipped out to an early 3-0 lead against the Captains, CNU orchestrated a response. On the back end,
Lexi Larson helped force a turnover with tight pressure at the top of the zone before
Annabella Burke bolted in and pounced on the loose ball. Working quickly, Burke connected with
Faith O'Connor, who completed the clear.
Keeping the defense on its heels, O'Connor barreled towards the cage before flipping the ball to
Kate Webb, who capitalized with a fake-and-finish near the left post.
Less than two minutes later, Sorkin got her afternoon started after skipping a seed through the keeper, which cut the Big Red's lead down to 3-2.
Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Christopher Newport held Denison in check. Chadwick registered three saves, including a stick-side snag on a free-position attempt and a great read on a tough bouncer from long range. Additionally, Morrison killed a clear with a fantastic over-the-head check near the right sideline, which kept the deficit at one.
Unfortunately, the hosts regained the momentum in the second stanza. Controlling possession throughout the period, Denison strung together six straight goals to steal a 9-2 edge entering the break.
In the third quarter, the Big Red continued its assault and gained a double-digit cushion after scoring the first three goals of the period.
Staring at a 12-2 hole, Sorkin went to work. Refusing to go down quietly, the senior was nearly unstoppable at the end of the third frame. First, in the 42nd minute, she stung a high heater into the top left corner of the cage. Just 40 seconds later, she changed levels and drained a bouncer into the bottom of the net for her second straight tally.
With a little time left on the clock, Sorkin came back with one more blow. This time, she handcuffed the keeper with a laser from the left alley while squeezing a shot between the goalie and the pipe for her fourth goal of the contest.
Although Denison fired back with two tallies to open the final frame,
Brooklynn Peterson had an answer. On a clear attempt by the hosts, she flashed her wheels and jumped in front of a midfielder. Forcing her opponent to attempt an off-balance, open-field cut, the freshman applied enough pressure to cause the player to lose her footing.
After the ball popped free, Peterson hopped on the roller and took off in the opposite direction. With a clear path towards the cage, she eventually uncorked a fast-break bouncer to cut Denison's lead back down to eight.
Continuing the defensive work, Morrison came back with another over-the-head strip on the back end. Later, after an errant pass clanked off the turf,
Sam Murphy did the dirty work. She boxed out a pair of attackers before shoveling the ball to
Molly Campbell, who jump-started a successful clear.Â
Taking advantage of the possession, Sorkin charged down the right alley, cut around a defender, shrugged off some contact, and buried a missile on the move for her fifth goal.
Sadly, the Captains were unable to inch any closer. At the tail end of regulation, Denison tossed one more goal on the board before wrapping up the 16-7 win.
Overall, Denison held a 32-31 advantage in shots, while Christopher Newport led the way in ground balls, 21-20. The Captains also controlled 13 of the game's 25 draws. Along with the work of Morrison and Rotzler, O'Connor collected three draw controls of her own.
CNU will return to action on Sunday when the Captains travel to Gambier, Ohio for a noon showdown with Kenyon.
