NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
After extending the program's winning streak to five straight games, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team jumped up six spots in the latest IWLCA National Coaches Poll as the Captains settled into 19th in the most recent rankings, which were released by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association on Monday morning.

Just one week after breaking into the top-25 for the first time this season, CNU vaulted up the poll and secured the program's highest ranking in over a year. The No. 19 spot stands as the top position attained by the Captains since they sat 16th on February 24, 2025.

Overall, the six-spot leap was the largest of any program in the country over the past week.

The top of the poll remained unchanged from last Monday as Middlebury remained in the No. 1 spot, while Wesleyan, Tufts, Salisbury, and Amherst rounded out the top-five. Along with Salisbury, who will host the Captains in a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference tilt on April 25, two other upcoming foes also earned spots in the latest poll.

On Saturday, Christopher Newport will travel to Denison, who moved to 10th in the most recent rankings. One week later, on April 4, CNU will head to No. 18 Rowan for another top-25 road tilt.

Among past opponents, Washington and Lee moved up to sixth in the poll, while York (Pa.) dropped to seventh. Additionally, Haverford returned to the rankings and grabbed the No. 25 position.

Christopher Newport will be back in action on Wednesday when the Captains host Washington (Md.) in a 4 p.m. contest at Jennings Family Stadium. Entering the battle, CNU sits at 8-1 on the season, including 6-0 at home. Meanwhile, the Shorewomen are 6-2 with a 3-1 mark on the road.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains are coming off of a thrilling 13-12 victory at York (Pa.) on Saturday. Entering the game slotted sixth in last week's IWLCA National Coaches Poll, the Spartans were the highest ranked team ever defeated by CNU. Previously, Christopher Newport had two other top-10 triumphs after beating No. 7 Washington and Lee on February 21, 2024 and No. 10 Catholic on March 3, 2016.

Saturday's victory was also the program's first against York (Pa.) after the Spartans had won the previous 10 battles dating back to the 2014 campaign.

On an individual level, Brookelyn Morrison made history on both ends of the field over the weekend. Offensively, she produced four points, including a pair of goals. Her final tally gave the squad a lead it would never relinquish and marked her 12th consecutive free-position conversion dating back to last season. That broke the previous program record of 11 straight eight-meter goals set by CNU Hall of Famer Meaghan Galvin in 2016 and matched by longtime standout Catie Chess from 2017-18.

Meanwhile, on the back end, Morrison forced five turnovers against the Spartans. That equaled the third-most against a nationally-ranked opponent in school history and the second-highest total against a top-10 foe.

Along with Morrison, three other Captains chipped in with four-point efforts as Kate Lamendola, Faith O'Connor, and Elena Sorkin rounded out the high-volume scorers. O'Connor also secured seven draw controls and set a new career-high with three takeaways, while Lamendola tallied a pair of strips as well.

With their work over the weekend, two standouts inched closer to career milestones. Morrison is currently three draw controls short of 300 for her career, which would place her alongside Galvin as the only Captains to eclipse that benchmark. She is also two takeaways shy of reaching 150. Already the program record-holder in that category, she would become just the 52nd player in the history of Division III lacrosse to hit that mark.

Additionally, between the pipes, Hadley Chadwick concluded Saturday with 399 career saves. With one more stop, she would join former CNU greats Kaitlyn Ready, Gayle Robinson, and Hanna Slough as the only players to reach 400 total saves.

Washington (Md.) enters the midweek match-up on a four-game winning streak, including a 13-9 triumph over Dickinson in the Centennial Conference opener on Saturday. Against the Red Devils, Piper Evans and Anna Wilson both had four goals, while MaryCate Anson pocketed eight draw controls.

Led by Anson, Washington (Md.) has dominated on the draw throughout the 2026 campaign. The Shorewomen are averaging 17.13 draws per game, which is the fourth-highest rate in the NCAA. The squad also sits 15th in the country in scoring offense with a 16.00 goals-per-game average. On an individual level, Mia Salvatierra is 22nd in the country with 44 points, while Anson also ranks 22nd with 53 draw controls.

In seven previous meetings between the two programs, Washington (Md.) holds a 7-0 edge in the all-time series, including a 12-11 win in Chestertown, Maryland last year. Sorkin had a hat-trick for the Captains in that game, while Evans and Salvatierra had four goals each for the Shorewomen.

After Wednesday, Christopher Newport will embark on a four-game road swing, beginning with a noon test at No. 10 Denison on Saturday.
