YORK, Pa. -- Starring on both ends of the field,
Brookelyn Morrison pieced together a historic masterclass while helping lift the 25th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 13-12 victory over No. 6 York (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon at Kinsley Field.
Against the Spartans, the senior All-American posted four points, including a pair of goals. Her second strike of the contest broke a deadlock early in the second quarter and gave the Captains a lead they would never relinquish. That go-ahead goal also marked Morrison's 12th consecutive free-position conversion, which established a new program record. She broke the previous school standard of 11 straight eight-meter strikes, which was originally accomplished by CNU Hall of Famer Meaghan Galvin in 2016 and matched by longtime legend Catie Chess from 2017-18.
In addition to her work on the offensive side, Morrison also came away with five caused turnovers. That equaled the second-most by a Captain against a top-10 opponent in program history.
Along with Morrison's efforts,
Kate Lamendola,
Faith O'Connor, and
Elena Sorkin had four points apiece. Helping control possession, O'Connor also hauled in seven draw controls, which marked the fourth-highest total against a top-10 foe. Stuffing the stat sheet, she added three takeaways and a pair of ground balls as well.
Putting on a defensive clinic throughout the 60-minute affair, Christopher Newport baited the Spartans into 17 total turnovers. Lamendola had two strips for the Captains, while
Sam Murphy chipped in with one. The freshman phenom also came away with a momentum-turning ground ball and snagged the final draw in the waning moments of regulation to seal the win.
With the victory, CNU improved to 8-1 on the season and extended the squad's winning streak to five straight contests. That equals the program's longest run since a nine-game roll from March 3 - April 1, 2016.
Adding another layer to Saturday's historic showcase, the No. 6 Spartans, who fell to 5-2, were the highest ranked team ever defeated by the Captains. Previously, the squad knocked off No. 7 Washington and Lee, 12-10, on February 21, 2024.
From the outset, the two teams were evenly matched. Early on, Morrison connected with Lamendola on the squad's opening tally before burying a high hammer of her own just a few minutes later. Then, after the hosts erupted for three straight goals to steal a 4-2 edge, Sorkin fired back. After sidestepping a defender at the top of the zone, she pushed to her right and stung a missile inside the post to steal back some momentum.
Although York retaliated at the end of the opening period to regain a two-goal cushion, O'Connor put the team on her back early in the second stanza.
Kicking things off, the junior found herself isolated in the left wing. Unfazed by the situation, she cut through a pair of Spartans before sprinting toward the crease. Eventually, she confronted three more defenders on the doorstep before firing a blast through the keeper along the left pipe.
Less than a minute later, York attempted to clear its defensive end by tossing the ball back to the goalie. Standing in the way, O'Connor jumped the passing lane and came down with a leaping interception. After securing possession, she quickly capitalized on the unsettled situation to knot the score at five.
With work left to do, O'Connor continued her clinic just 20 seconds later. Flashing her precision, she dropped a dime to Lamendola, who was blanketed by four defenders on the interior. In tight quarters, the junior came down with the catch and slammed into a wall of Spartans before firing a rope inside the left pipe, which handed the visitors a 6-5 edge.
After York knotted the score in the middle of the stanza, Lamendola came back with a defensive highlight. On the back end, she badgered an attacker with relentless pressure in the left alley. Eventually, her work led to an errant pass, which Murphy plucked on the inside.
Taking advantage of the ensuing possession, Morrison added her name to the history books. After securing a free-position attempt, she immediately capitalized. Setting up on the left hash, she fired a seed across the zone and planted it just inside the right post, which gave CNU a 7-6 edge.
Looking for a little more breathing room, Morrison continued her assault. Harassing a defender on a clear attempt, she forced the Spartan to retreat in the left wing. Then, from behind, she clubbed the ball loose, collected the bouncer, and fed it to Lamendola, who notched a tracer in transition.
Shortly thereafter, the hosts cut their deficit back down to one, but CNU answered. On the offensive side, Sorkin found
Elle Roberts cutting through the defense for the squad's ninth tally. Then, in the waning moments of the first half,
Hadley Chadwick collected a pair of saves after swallowing a bouncer from the left wing before pocketing a hip-high hammer from the same spot.
Carrying a 9-7 lead into halftime, Christopher Newport put on a defensive masterpiece in the third stanza. O'Connor drove a midfielder into the turf on a clear attempt before Morrison picked off a pass down low. Moments later, Sorkin and
Annabella Burke sandwiched a Spartan on another failed clear before
Gabby Saia shined on the back end.
First,
Jess Hulse stood up an attacker along the right sideline before Saia swooped in and wrestled possession away to flip the field. Then, after the Spartans returned to the offensive end, Saia stopped a run at the top of the zone, which forced an attacker to cut back into traffic. Perfectly positioned,
Maura Farrell helped jostle the ball loose before Murphy grabbed control and ended the threat.
Meanwhile, on the offensive side, Burke came through with a fake-and-finish near the right post. Then, O'Connor broke the ankles of a defender, bounced off a second Spartan, and sank a spinner into the lower left corner of the cage to lock up an 11-7 lead entering the final frame.
Continuing the onslaught in the fourth quarter, Lamendola pushed the advantage to five goals after dodging a defender in the right alley.
After York fired back with two straight goals, Sorkin provided the final offensive highlight in the 56th minute. Rolling over a defender on the right side, she snapped a sidewinder around the hip of the Spartan, which gave the visitors a 13-9 lead.
With time winding down, York mounted a furious rally. In just over a minute, the hosts connected on two straight tallies. Needing a response, Morrison was up to the task. Building a barricade at the top of the zone, the fourth-year sensation knocked the ball away from an attacker for a brief moment. After recovering the roller, the Spartan attempted a spin move, but Morrison was there again. This time, she dragged her opponent to the turf before Murphy came up with the loose ball.
Entering the final minute of action, York pushed forward and scored with 40 seconds left to cut its deficit back down to one.
Needing one last highlight, Murphy secured the victory. On the ensuing draw, she flipped the ball to herself. Elevating in the center of the field, the freshman made an outstretched snag to grab possession before spinning away from the crowd and clearing the ball up the right sideline, which helped cap off the win.
Overall, CNU held a 35-27 advantage in shots and a 20-16 edge in ground balls. The Captains also controlled 15 of the game's 27 draws.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. bout against Washington (Md.) at Jennings Family Stadium.
