Christopher Newport extended its winning streak to four straight contests after knocking off Shenandoah, 17-9, on Wednesday. The four-game roll equals the program's longest since a five-game run from March 26 - April 12, 2023.
Against the Hornets,
Brookelyn Morrison converted her 11th consecutive free-position attempt, which tied CNU Hall of Famer Meaghan Galvin and former legend Catie Chess for the longest streak by a Captain. Her run also stands as the longest active stretch in the nation.
In addition to Morrison, the Captains have been lethal from the eight-meter arc throughout the 2026 campaign. Christopher Newport has a remarkable .686 conversion rate, which ranks eighth in the NCAA. Along with Morrison's perfect record on free-position attempts,
Elena Sorkin is 6-for-9 on her tries, while
Faith O'Connor and
Molly Campbell have landed five apiece.
Among the younger members of the team, freshman
Brooklynn Peterson has also sank two of her three eight-meter shots this season.
Aided by their efforts on free-position attempts, Sorkin and O'Connor both rank among the nation's top-20 goal-scorers in 2026. Sorkin is 14th nationally with 31 strikes, while O'Connor is 16th with 30. Both stars notched their 30th goal of the year in the win over Shenandoah. Reaching that milestone in just the eighth game of the year, they became the fastest Captains to hit 30 goals since CNU Hall of Famer Ashton Marshall had 30 in seven games during the 2013 campaign.
Overall this season, Christopher Newport boasts the nation's fifth-ranked scoring offense. The team is averaging 17.75 goals per game, which is also the top rate in school history.
Saturday's game will be York's fourth straight bout against a nationally-ranked foe. During that stretch, the Spartans have identical 12-11 wins over No. 10 Franklin & Marshall and No. 21 Trinity (Conn.) along with a 13-12 overtime setback against No. 12 Washington and Lee.
York has been especially effective at controlling possession this season, averaging 15.00 draws per game. That stands as the 23rd-best rate in the NCAA. On an individual level, Sydney Mentzer is averaging 7.50 draws per contest, which places her 11th in the country. Mentzer also leads the squad with 16 goals and 10 assists, while Audrey Simoes has a .446 save percentage and 9.74 goals-against-average between the pipes.
In 10 previous meetings between the two programs, York holds a 10-0 edge in the series, including a 15-10 triumph in 2024. Morrison and
Page Henry both had a pair of goals in that contest, while
Hadley Chadwick added five saves.
After Saturday, Christopher Newport will return to action on March 25 with a 4 p.m. bout against Washington (Md.) at Jennings Family Stadium.
