No. 25 CNU Women's Tennis Falls to No. 13 Carnegie Mellon in Spring Break Opener

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Taking on the 13th-ranked Tartans of Carnegie Mellon University (7-0), the Christopher Newport women's tennis team fell by a final score of 7-0. The Captains fell to 2-3 overall this season with the setback.

The Tartans swept doubles play to pick up the team point heading into singles. In singles action, the Captains were led by Kendal Chang and Eva Taylor. Both players won a set in their individual matchups and Taylor just missed picking up a team point for the Captains.

Playing at No. 4 singles against Divya Venkatarama, Taylor fell by a final score of 7-6 (2), 5-7, 1-0 (10-6). The Captains' senior dropped the first set by the thinnest of margins before holding off Venkatarama in the second set, 7-5. In the third, Taylor hung with her Tartan counterpart throughout before the final score, 10-6.

In the No. 2 singles match, Chang picked up the first set against Shelly Zinchenko before falling in the second and third. Taking on the 2025 Region Rookie of the Year, Chang held her own before falling 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Both Lindsey Brergelin and Erin Gross also extended their opponent to a seventh game in their matches. At No. 5, Bergelin forced a second-set tiebreaker, which she dropped in a narrow 7-5 margin, and at No. 6, Gross forced her opponent to win the first set, 7-5.
