Christopher Newport to Host NCAA Men's Basketball Friday and Saturday at the Freeman Center

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University has advanced to the NCAA Division III Men's Baskeball Tournament for the tenth straight time, and the Captains will host games at the Freeman Center this Friday and Saturday. The 64-team bracket was released on Monday afternoon by the NCAA.

The Captains, 21-5, received one of 21 at-large bids to the tourney, and will play the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology Friday. Christopher Newport has the longest-running current streak of NCAA trips in the country and will begin their tenth straight with a home matchup with a Stevens team that is 18-9 and won the title of the MAC Freedom Conference.

In the other opening round game on Friday at the Freeman Center, the University of Mount Union (23-3) will play Washington & Jefferson College (22-6). The Purple Raiders of Mount Union received an at-large bid to the tournament, while the Presidents of W&J won the title of the Presidents' Athletic Conference. 

Game times for Friday's opening round games will be 3:15 p.m. for the Mount Union/Washington & Jefferson opener, and 5:45 p.m. for the CNU/Stevens matchup. The winners will play on Saturday at the Freeman Center with tip time set for 5:45 p.m. Click HERE to access the complete bracket.

The trip to the tournament will be the 29th in the 58-year history of the CNU program. The Captains are 13-1 at the Freeman Center this season, and have a mark of 37-27 all-time in NCAA Tournament play. John Krikorian's squad won the National Championship in the 2022-2023 season, beating Mount Union in the title game. Friday's game with Stevens will be the first ever of the programs. 

The Captains fell in their last game on Saturday to the University of Mary Washington in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conferrence Championship game, 85-55, in Santa Cruz, Ca. 

Ticket Prices for the games will be $10.00 for General Admission and $15.00 for Chairback seats. CNU Students with a current CNU ID will be admitted free. Chairback seats will be available for purchase online and at the Freeman Center Ticket Office starting on Wednesday, March 4th at 1:00 p.m. All ticket sales are final, with no refunds or exchanges.
