Captains Take Advantage of Power-Play Opportunities as No. 25 CNU Women's Lacrosse Conquers Shenandoah, 17-9

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Taking full advantage of a series of power-play opportunities, the 25th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team upended Shenandoah, 17-9, during a non-conference test on Wednesday evening at Aikens Stadium.

Against the Hornets, the Captains landed six power-play goals, which marked the second-highest total in program history. On an individual level, Brookelyn Morrison contributed three of those strikes, which equaled her own school standard. Previously, she had three man-up tallies against Rhodes on March 10, 2024 and Mary Washington on April 30, 2025.

Adding even more history to her performance on Wednesday, Morrison converted her 11th consecutive free-position attempt with an eight-meter missile in the second quarter. That matches the longest streak in program history. Previously, CNU Hall of Famer Meaghan Galvin had 11 straight conversions during the 2016 campaign, while longtime legend Catie Chess had an identical stretch from 2017-18.

Overall, Morrison finished the contest with six points after posting four goals and two assists. The senior All-American also pocketed three draw controls, including her 50th of the year. Coupled with her work over the previous three campaigns, she became just the second Captain to register at least 50 draw controls in four straight seasons. In that club, she joined Galvin, who accomplished the feat from 2014-17.

Along with Morrison, Elena Sorkin notched a game-high five goals, while Molly Campbell, Faith O'Connor, and Elle Roberts had two apiece.

Among their highlights on Wednesday, both Sorkin and O'Connor dropped in their 30th goal of the year. Reaching that benchmark in just the eighth game of the season, they became the fastest Captains to accomplish the feat since CNU Hall of Famer Ashton Marshall hit 30 goals in only seven games during her legendary 2013 campaign.

In addition to the offensive standouts, Christopher Newport baited Shenandoah into a season-high 20 turnovers. Morrison had three takeaways, while Sam Murphy snatched a pair. Meanwhile, on the back end, Hadley Chadwick picked up four saves, including three in the second half, to secure the win.

With the victory, CNU improved to 7-1 on the season, while the setback dropped Shenandoah to 5-3. Wednesday's win was also the Captains' first triumph in Winchester since defeating the Hornets, 15-10, on February 27, 2018.

Although the hosts slipped out to an early advantage less than two minutes into regulation, Christopher Newport quickly retaliated. Pounding away on the offensive end, Morrison landed the equalizer off a feed from Kate Webb. Sorkin also chipped in with her first two tallies, including a blast mere moments after killing off a Shenandoah clear attempt with a strip in the 11th minute.

Along with Sorkin's efforts in transition, Murphy added a pair of takeaways in the opening quarter, while Morrison and Lexi Larson caused miscues on back-to-back rallies during a suffocating stretch in the middle of the stanza.

Carrying a slim 3-2 edge into the second quarter, CNU quickly gained a little breathing room. Just over a minute into the period, Sorkin deposited her third goal of the game after Webb secured a second-chance opportunity with a key ground ball off an initial save by the hosts. Later, Roberts and Annabella Burke connected on two straight blows during a 60-second spurt, which handed the visitors a four-goal lead.

Battling back, the Hornets responded with their own three-goal surge, which cut Christopher Newport's advantage back down to one.

Unfazed by Shenandoah's resurgence, CNU had an answer. With Murphy securing three consecutive draw controls, the attack took advantage of the extra possessions. In less than two minutes, Morrison and Campbell dropped in eight-meter tallies, while O'Connor added her first goal to lock up a 9-5 edge entering halftime.

After the break, the Hornets found a little rhythm and pulled back within two, but Christopher Newport never let them get any closer. During the third quarter, Chadwick hauled in a pair of saves, Morrison collected her third caused turnover, and Sorkin drained a last-second strike to gain a 10-7 cushion with 15 minutes left in regulation.

Searching for a little more wiggle room, the Captains kicked off the fourth-quarter with another lethal attack. Campbell opened the onslaught with her second free-position dart before Roberts came through with a goal and an assist during a 40-second blitz. Then, in the 48th minute, Webb connected with Morrison, who gave the visitors a comfortable 14-7 lead.

With little left to prove, CNU put the game on ice. Chadwick turned away an eight-meter attempt, while O'Connor, Morrison, and Drew Stanley all tossed goals on the board to lock up the 17-9 triumph.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 32-15 advantage in shots and a 19-12 lead in ground balls. The victors also controlled 16 of the game's 27 draws. On an individual level, O'Connor came down with five draw controls, and Murphy picked up a game-high five ground balls. Additionally, Webb finished the contest with three assists, while Page Henry notched a pair of helpers.

CNU will return to action on Saturday at noon when the Captains travel to No. 6 York (Pa.) for a top-25 showdown.
