Hadley Chadwick and Lisa Valentine Reach Career Milestones as CNU Women's Lacrosse Knocks Off Ursinus, 21-4

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Setting a pair of program records on the same day, Hadley Chadwick and Lisa Valentine became the winningest goalie and head coach in school history while leading the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team to a 21-4 victory over Ursinus on a spectacular Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.

Against the Bears, Chadwick posted five saves, including four in the first half, as the Captains slipped out to a commanding lead. With her work in the cage, the senior star recorded her 37th career victory at CNU. That moved her past former legends Gayle Robinson and Hanna Slough for the top spot on the program's all-time wins list.

Adding her own historic footnote, Valentine picked up her 105th victory since taking the helm of the Captains in 2016. That also moved her to the top of the school's all-time charts, eclipsing longtime head coach Carolyn Query, who registered a 104-49 record from 2008-15.

Leading the way on the offensive side, Faith O'Connor drove home six goals, which marked her seventh consecutive hat-trick. That run is just one shy of matching the longest streak in school history, which was accomplished by CNU Hall of Famer Kaitlin Quigley from March 27 - April 20, 2010.

Along with O'Connor, Elena Sorkin finished with four goals, while Elle Roberts collected her first career hat-trick. Brookelyn Morrison also opened the scoring after converting her 10th consecutive free-position attempt dating back to last season. That stands as the longest active streak in the NCAA and matches the third-best run in school history. Previously, former standouts Meaghan Galvin and Catie Chess had 11 consecutive eight-meter conversions, while Elaine Kirby sank 10 straight free-position shots.

In addition to her offensive efforts, Morrison had a pair of takeaways. Her final caused turnover was her 20th of the season. Coupled with her efforts over the past three years, she became just the second Captain in school history to record at least 20 strips in four consecutive campaigns. In that club, she joined former teammate Madi Rozgonyi, who accomplished the feat from 2022-25.

Gabby Saia also had four caused turnovers for the victors, including the 50th of her career. She became just the 21st Captain to reach that milestone.

With the win, Christopher Newport improved to 6-1 on the season, while the setback dropped Ursinus to 4-3.

Early on, the Captains stormed out to a 6-0 lead in the opening period. During the offensive surge, Morrison kicked off the fireworks after landing an eight-meter missile inside the right post. Later, she assisted on a dart by Molly Campbell before adding an all-around effort on O'Connor's second tally.

On the play, Ursinus came away with a draw control, but Morrison stalked the Bear around the center stripe. Eventually, she unleashed a trail-check to rip the ball away from behind. After recovering the roller, she flipped possession to O'Connor, who quickly capitalized in transition.

Along with Morrison's early efforts, Roberts kicked off her afternoon by dipping underneath a defender in the left alley before converting along the post. Later, she grabbed a feed from Kate Webb and unleashed a missile on the move to help the hosts steal a 6-0 lead.

Equally effective on the defensive side, Saia blanketed the field. She launched an attacker across the left sideline to force an early turnover before intercepting a pair of errant passes. Annabella Burke also picked off a failed clear in the 10th minute, which helped keep a tight lid on the Ursinus attack.

Although the visitors eventually found a rhythm and collected back-to-back goals, CNU retaliated just before the end of the period. With mere seconds left on the clock, Webb split two defenders with a pinpoint pass from the left wing. On the inside, O'Connor hauled in the feed and scored on the doorstep to complete her first-quarter hat-trick.

In the second stanza, Christopher Newport continued its assault. Sorkin spun around a Bear in the left alley before scoring on the inside. Shortly thereafter, Roberts snapped a seed around the goalie before O'Connor came back with another eight-meter rope. Then, only seconds later, Page Henry connected with Drew Stanley on a man-up missile to push the lead to 11-2.

On the other end of the field, Chadwick put on a showcase in the crease. The senior goalie stoned a worm-burner from her knees along the left post before pinning her body to the opposite pipe, which helped kill an eight-meter attempt. Later, she pocketed another low liner and deflected a tough bouncer before Sorkin added the final blow of the first half, which gave the hosts a 12-4 lead after 30 minutes of action.

Following the break, CNU extended its edge to double-digits. In transition, Kate Lamendola found O'Connor, who went with an off-speed snipe on the interior. Later, after wrestling possession away from a Bear along the right sideline, Burke took advantage of her own efforts with an eight-meter blast, which pushed the lead to 14-4.

Still rolling along, O'Connor finished off a breakaway with a bullet in the 37th minute. Then, Sorkin came back with two straight tallies, including a dazzling strike from the left alley that saw her twirl through three defenders before scoring along the crease.

Meanwhile, on the other end, Morrison picked off a feed in traffic, Sorkin stood up a midfielder along the center stripe on a failed clear, and Sam Murphy intercepted a pass near the crease to keep a 17-4 lead entering the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the defense continued to shine. Maura Farrell stopped an attacker in her tracks before Saia swooped in and cleaned up the play with her fourth takeaway. Meanwhile, on the back end, Chadwick kicked off the period with a slick stop on a five-hole attempt before Rowen Arena subbed in and gobbled up a turnaround tracer to cap off the action.

On the offensive end, CNU wrapped up another historic outing from the eight-meter arc. Campbell, Cayden Grasso, and Emilie Shoults all sank free-position attempts in the period, which gave the Captains seven total eight-meter goals during the contest. That equaled the third-most in program history.

Along with the free-position strikes, Brooklynn Peterson added one final tally after shrugging off a hit along the right post. Remarkably, she stayed out of the crease and ripped a rocket just before crashing down on the turf to help punctuate the victory.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 36-13 advantage in shots and a 16-9 edge in ground balls. The Captains also controlled 16 of the game's 26 draws. On an individual level, Morrison finished with six draw controls, while Campbell, O'Connor, and Shoults had three apiece.

CNU will return to action on March 18 when the squad heads to Shenandoah for a 5 p.m. tilt.
