NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Putting on a clinic from the eight-meter arc, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team converted eight free-position shots while rolling past St. Mary's (Md.), 24-5, on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.
The eight free-position goals equaled the single-game school record, matching an identical eruption against Mary Washington on April 1, 2015. Meanwhile, the 24 total tallies tied the fifth-most in program history and the finest effort since a 25-goal explosion against N.C. Wesleyan on April 3, 2013.
Adding another layer to Saturday's historic assault, the 24 goals established a new facility record. The outburst eclipsed the squad's 23-goal onslaught in the season opener against Berry on February 13 and a similar 23-goal surge against Virginia Wesleyan on March 10, 2021.
On an individual level,
Brookelyn Morrison matched her career-high with six goals, including three free-position darts. Her three tallies from the eight-meter arc equaled the fourth-most in program history. She fell just one shy of tying the school record originally set by Ashton Marshall and matched by Meaghan Galvin and Sarah Culver.
Along with Morrison's efforts,
Elena Sorkin equaled her personal-best with five goals, while
Drew Stanley tied her career-high with four strikes.
Faith O'Connor also landed a hat-trick for the victors, while
Kate Webb carved up the opposition with three assists.
In addition to the offensive standouts,
Kate Lamendola came through with four caused turnovers, while
Gabby Saia and
Sam Murphy had three apiece. With her performance on the defensive side, Murphy became the first Captain in program history to begin her career with multiple takeaways in each of her first three games. Previously, Cat Leighty had two strips in her first two appearances during the 2018 campaign.
Contributing her own historic footnote, fellow freshman
Annabella Burke handed out a pair of helpers on Saturday. Coupled with her work against Berry and Roanoke, she became just the second Captain to register multiple assists in each of her first three appearances. In that exclusive club, she joined perennial All-American Kelsey Winters, who kicked off her award-winning career with multiple assists in four straight games during the 2020 season.
With the victory, CNU improved to 3-0 on the season, while the setback dropped St. Mary's (Md.) to 0-4.
Lighting up the scoreboard from the very beginning, the Captains collected five consecutive goals in the first four minutes of action. O'Connor led the early surge with two tallies, including a slippery strike that saw her weave through three Seahawks on a sprint down the center of the zone. Morrison also notched her first free-position goal, while Sorkin connected on a high-to-low hammer before the hosts added to their highlight-reel in the fourth minute.
With possession along the left side of the crease, Webb threaded a pass over two defenders. On the interior,
Molly Campbell reached up and deflected the feed just enough to send it spinning towards Stanley. After collecting the redirect, Stanley sank a one-timer into the bottom left corner of the cage to steal a 5-0 lead.
Just as effective on the defensive side, Murphy and
Lexi Larson swallowed up an attacker who attempted to wiggle through a crowd along the crease, while Saia launched a Seahawk over the end line to force another turnover. Shortly thereafter, Murphy came back with two more strips, including a slick play off a draw that saw her knock the ball away from a Seahawk and shovel it around two more midfielders before picking it off the turf.
Although the visitors eventually deposited their first goal in the seventh minute, Christopher Newport wrapped up the opening period in style. Stanley converted on a cut down the right alley before Webb teamed up with Sorkin and O'Connor on back-to-back bullets from the opposite side. Later, Murphy added an eight-meter missile, while
Megan Rotzler fed Morrison, who twisted around a defender for a dagger on the doorstep.
Holding a comfortable 10-1 lead at the end of the opening frame, CNU continued its assault in the second stanza. Leading the way, Sorkin posted three goals in the period, including a pair of free-position tallies and a missile on the move after circling through a scrum in the left wing. Morrison also deposited a pair, including a goal set-up by wonderful work from Burke.
In the 27th minute, Burke grabbed possession behind the crease. Matched up one-on-one with a defender, she used a pump-fake to get the Seahawk to elevate her stick. After creating a little space, she snapped a pass around the hip of the defender, which resulted in a quick-hitter by Morrison along the right post.
On the opposite side of the field, the hosts kept a tight lid on St. Mary's high-powered attack. Lamendola prevented a Seahawk from catching a pass in the left wing after knocking the player's stick out of position. Later, she ran stride-for-stride with a midfielder on a clear attempt. Eventually, she slipped in front of her opponent, stopped the rush, and popped the ball loose along the sideline.
Along the opposite boundary, O'Connor killed a clear after sandwiching a midfielder between herself, Sorkin, and the sideline. Meanwhile, on the back end,
Hadley Chadwick stoned a pair of on-target shots, including a low liner that nearly found an opening in the bottom left corner of the cage.
Carrying a 15-2 lead into halftime, Christopher Newport kept rolling after the break. On the defensive side, Chadwick notched her third save after pocketing a high heater from the interior. Lamendola also buried a midfielder into the turf off a draw, while Saia launched another Seahawk over the end line to thwart a later rally.
On the offensive end, CNU continued to star from the eight-meter arc. Morrison ripped a free-position attempt into the top left corner of the cage. Then,
Jacqueline Thomas cut past a defender and skipped one low along the left post, while
Elle Roberts snapped one around the keeper in the 42nd minute.
In addition to the eight-meter efforts, Morrison assisted on a goal by Lamendola before adding her sixth strike off a flip from
Maddie Lamy. Webb also completed her afternoon with a dime to
Emily Snyder, who painted the top right corner of the cage with a high-to-high hammer.
Now boasting a 21-3 advantage entering the final period, CNU slapped three late goals on the board. Kicking off the action,
Maura Farrell corralled a bounce pass from Lamy and cracked a bullet inside the left post. Later, Stanley added back-to-back darts. On the first one,
Cayden Grasso flashed tremendous hands behind the crease to collect an errant shot before finding Stanley storming down the center of the zone.
Moments later, Stanley capped off the action after securing a loose ball at the top of the arc. With four defenders in tow, she marched straight up the gut and sank a seed around the keeper to polish off the 24-5 win.
Overall, Christopher Newport held a 32-10 advantage in shots and a 13-6 edge in ground balls. Additionally, the Captains controlled 19 draws, including nine by Morrison.
Emilie Shoults also pocketed six, while Morrison, Saia, and Murphy picked up two ground balls apiece.
CNU will return to action on Wednesday when the Captains travel to No. 9 Washington and Lee for a 6 p.m. clash.
