NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Wrapping up its three-game homestand, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will host St. Mary's (Md.) in a non-conference battle beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Jennings Family Stadium.

Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 2-0 on the season, while St. Mary's (Md.) is 0-3, including 0-2 on the road.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

After opening the year with commanding victories over Berry and Roanoke, Christopher Newport enters Saturday looking to wrap up a perfect early-season stretch at Jennings Family Stadium. The Captains have not completed an undefeated homestand of at least three games since 2018 when CNU beat Southern Virginia, Wesley, and St. Mary's (Md.) in consecutive conference battles.

So far this season, Christopher Newport has capitalized on a swarming defensive performance. The team is averaging 22.00 takeaways-per-game, which is the third-highest rate in the NCAA. The Captains had 24 caused turnovers in the 23-2 win against Berry before adding 20 during the 17-9 triumph over Roanoke. Both of those efforts rank among the program's all-time top-10 single-game performances.

On an individual level, Brookelyn Morrison tied the school record with eight takeaways against Berry, while Molly Campbell matched the program's eighth-highest total with six against Roanoke. Fittingly, the prodigious pair swept the last two Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week awards.

Equally impressive on the back end, Sam Murphy ranks second on the team with seven caused turnovers. She has registered multiple strips in each of her first two collegiate appearances, joining former legend Cat Leighty as the only Captains to accomplish that feat.

Remarkably, 11 different players have multiple takeaways this year. Among them, Morrison, Murphy, Brooklynn Peterson, Annabella Burke, Gabby Saia, and Lexi Larson have all forced at least one miscue in both games this spring.

On the other end of the field, CNU features the country's eighth-ranked scoring offense, which is averaging 20 goals per contest. The squad's 40 total tallies equals the highest output through two games in program history. The 2011 squad also had 40 goals in its first two outings of the year.

Headlining the attack, Preseason All-American Faith O'Connor has 10 points, including nine goals. Meanwhile, Elena Sorkin sits second on the squad with seven strikes, including four against Roanoke last Saturday. For that eruption, she was hailed as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

St. Mary's (Md.) comes into Saturday on a three-game skid, including a 16-10 setback against Shenandoah last Saturday. Despite the early stumbles, junior Hope Harrison has gotten off to a fantastic start in 2026. The third-year star leads the United East Conference with 12 points, including 10 goals. She was also celebrated as the league's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after matching her career-high with four strikes against Shenandoah.

A perennial favorite in the United East Conference, the Seahawks have won the league title during each of the last four years. The current roster features three reigning All-League performers. Senior Carsyn Smith was named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2025 and already has two takeaways and four ground balls this season. Meanwhile, Harrison and Katelin Scala also garnered league-wide recognition last spring.

In 23 previous match-ups between the two programs, CNU holds a 14-9 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains posted an 11-9 win in Maryland, including two goals apiece from O'Connor, Kate Lamendola, and Drew Stanley.

After this weekend's action, Christopher Newport will hit the road for a 6 p.m. showdown at No. 9 Washington and Lee on March 4.
