Kevin Miller Collects 200th Career Point as No. 3 CNU Men's Lacrosse Rolls to 14-6 Victory over Randolph-Macon

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Continuing his assault on the history books, Kevin Miller recorded his 200th career point while leading the third-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team to a 14-6 triumph over Randolph-Macon on a sunny Wednesday evening at Jennings Family Stadium.

Against the Yellow Jackets, Miller led the way with seven points, including the 200th of his career. Reaching the milestone in just his 48th appearance with the Captains, he became the fastest player in program history to hit the benchmark. Previously, former All-American Andrew Cook accomplished the feat in his 49th outing at CNU.

For the third straight game, Miller handed out six assists, which equaled the fourth-most by a player in program history. During the contest, he also climbed to second on the school's all-time leaderboard in career assists. Eventually, he finished the game with 131 helpers, which vaulted him past his older brother, Drew Miller, who had 125 from 2020-24.

Equally effective on the offensive end, Jamie Smith paced the victors with six goals. That matched the 10th-highest total in school history.

On the other end of the field, Christopher Newport put on a defensive clinic. The Captains allowed just one goal in the first half and held the opposition scoreless for 18 consecutive minutes, which included the entirety of the second quarter.

On an individual level, Mason Bellinger notched 11 saves, which was his fifth straight double-digit effort. Armer Harrison also contributed a team-high three takeaways, while Colin DeGrassi, Brett Kelley, and Chris Lewis added two apiece.

With the victory, CNU improved to 6-0 on the season, while the setback dropped Randolph-Macon to 4-1.

Helping the hosts jump out to an early lead, Miller had a hand in each of the game's first three goals. Less than two minutes into regulation, he caught a flip from Ryan Miller, slithered through four defenders, and wrapped a shot around the keeper from close range. Moments later, he dropped a pair of dimes to Smith and Jackson Shaw, who quickly capitalized for a healthy 3-0 advantage.

Still looking for more, the Captains continued their assault. In the eighth minute, Randolph Campbell curled behind the crease, battled through a long pole, and avoided a late slide before sinking a screamer on the doorstep. Then, Jude MacLean spun around one Yellow Jacket, knocked a second one backwards, and scored from long range.

Holding a 5-0 edge, CNU quickly landed a sixth blow in transition. On the back side, Bellinger pocketed a clean save and fed an outlet to Garrett Bralley, who cruised across midfield. Moving quickly, Bralley dished to Ryan Miller, who found John Santoro streaking down the center of the field. After collecting the pass, the fifth-year phenom converted an incredible bounce shot that skipped between two defenders before kissing off the crossbar.

Although the visitors finally found an answer with two minutes left in the opening period, CNU fired back. Once again, the hosts capitalized on a fast-break opportunity. After DeGrassi buried an attacker in the turf on the defensive side, he found Mark Davison storming across midfield. This time, Davison handed possession to Daniel Siaton, who found Smith on the interior for the squad's seventh goal.

Following the solid defensive work at the end of the opening quarter, Christopher Newport continued its domination in the second stanza. Early on, Bellinger slipped out of the crease and intercepted a pass before Rory Keverline had a successful trail-check to stymie another surge. Shortly thereafter, Harrison won a footrace for a loose ball near the left sideline before Kelley put on a one-man show.

On back-to-back possessions, Kelley halted Randolph-Macon's advances. First, he avoided a pick along the right post and blocked a shot in the alley before pouncing on the loose ball. Then, on RMC's next rush, he intercepted a failed clear near the right sideline before setting up one final push by the Captains.

Taking advantage on the last-minute opportunity, Kevin Miller found his younger brother, who went top-shelf with a stinger just inside the left post for an 8-1 lead.

Following the break, Christopher Newport continued to shine on the back end. Siaton stripped a Yellow Jacket from behind before Lewis punched one loose near the left pipe. Later, Bralley joined the party and de-twigged an attacker along the left sideline.

Meanwhile, on the offensive end, CNU remained vigilant. Carving up the opposition, Kevin Miller handed out three straight assists during a four-minute masterpiece. Kicking off the action, MacLean caught a flip and ripped a rocket around a closeout defender in the right alley. Then, Smith sank two goals of his own to push the lead to 11-3 at the end of the third frame.

In the final stanza, Smith continued his assault. Four minutes into the period, Harrison stole possession with a takeaway check at the top of the zone. After Kelley won a scramble for the roller, he kicked off another fast-break opportunity. On the offensive end, Siaton broke out a no-look pass to Smith, who sniped from the left side before Randolph-Macon's defense could catch up.

Moments later, Smith polished off his afternoon by cleaning up a little trash on the inside. After RMC's keeper made a tough save, the senior All-American slipped through two defenders and went airborne to snag a high bouncer. In one smooth motion, he landed back on the turf and unleashed a series of fakes before punching a shot around the goalie.

Easing into the victory, Christopher Newport picked up a few late-game highlights before capping off the win. On the back end, Caden Cunningham poked the ball away from the visitors with an outstretched strip in traffic. Jayden Hardnett also bullied an attacker into an errant pass before Blaise Coley picked off a failed clear near midfield.

Following the final takeaway, the offense went back to work. Before the Yellow Jackets could find their footing, Coley connected with Matt McCabe, who found Jack Herron streaking down the left alley. After making a spinning snag on McCabe's feed, Herron dove around the goalie while landing the final blow to lock up the 14-6 triumph.

Overall, CNU held a 40-31 advantage in shots and a 45-31 lead in ground balls. Kelley and Kevin Miller had four rollers apiece, while DeGrassi, Siaton, Coley, and Grant Giunchi picked up three each. Giunchi, Zach Ward, and Conner Derogatis also combined to win 10 faceoffs.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday when the Captains host Grove City at noon.
