NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Storming out to a six-goal lead at halftime, the third-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team never lost its advantage while rolling to a 10-7 victory over Grove City on a warm Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.
Against the Wolverines, CNU capitalized on a well-balanced attack which saw nine Captains register at least one point. Headlining the assault,
Jamie Smith collected his fifth straight hat-trick. Aided by that effort, the senior All-American eventually finished the contest with 124 career goals, moving past former legend and current broadcaster Will Geise for sole possession of seventh-place on the school's all-time leaderboard.
In addition to Smith,
Kevin Miller dished out three assists, while
Jude MacLean matched his career-high with three points, including a pair of helpers.
Randolph Campbell also deposited his third multi-goal effort of the season, including a highlight-reel buzzer-beater at the end of a lengthy possession in the second quarter.
On the back end,
Mason Bellinger notched 12 saves, and
Brett Kelley finished with a game-high three caused turnovers.
Garrett Bralley,
Mark Davison, and
Daniel Siaton also had two strips apiece as CNU baited the visitors into 17 turnovers, including 11 in the first half.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 7-0 on the season, while the setback dropped Grove City to 2-3.
Jumping on the Wolverines just 30 seconds into regulation, MacLean got the party started after spinning a missile from the top of the zone. Although the visitors clamped down during the middle of the first quarter, CNU quickly opened up a three-goal lead with a lethal eruption just before the end of the stanza.
Kicking off the late surge, Bellinger made a fantastic save on a bullet before Kelley came down with a leaping snag to collect the deflection. After gaining possession, the junior defenseman bolted up the right sideline. Eventually, he handed the ball off to
Will Cramp, who connected on a tracer in transition.
Moments later, after
Grant Giunchi pried a ball from the stick of a long pole on the ensuing faceoff, the attack went right back to work. This time,
Ethan Slusher spun over a defender and split two others with a dart into the bottom right corner of the cage, which handed the hosts a quick three-goal lead.
In the second stanza, CNU flashed its defensive chops.
Colin DeGrassi used a stick-lift to force a turnover in the right alley, while Miller hopped on his horse and caught up to a streaker before joining forces with Kelley on a takeaway. Seconds later, Davison flipped possession after winning a run-out with a diving play along the left boundary.
Later in the period, Siaton drove a Wolverine into the crease to kill off a mid-quarter surge, while Davison tied up an attacker near the right post. Meanwhile,
Jackson Shaw and
Jackson Platner sandwiched a midfielder along the center stripe to stymie a clear attempt.
Equally impressive on the offensive end, Shaw showed off fantastic hands behind the cage to corral a deflection off an initial rip by Campbell. After extending the play, the junior flipped a pass across the zone to Smith, who launched a laser from long range to secure a 4-1 edge.
Still rolling along, Campbell burned a defender in the left alley. With some space, he cut inside, elevated along the crease, and blasted a bullet over the keeper. Just six seconds later, after Giunchi won the faceoff, he stormed right up the gut and went high-to-low with a one-timer to push the advantage to five.
Following Grove City's second goal, Christopher Newport fired right back. In the 27th minute, the Captains sustained a lengthy possession. With the shot clock winding down,
Ryan Miller made a sensational save to keep the rally alive after grabbing an attempt that sailed past the cage. Eventually, he flipped the ball to his older brother, who dished it to Campbell.
With one second left on the shot clock and almost no angle, Campbell elevated in traffic and tucked a screamer into the top left corner of the cage for his second goal of the contest.
On the very next possession, MacLean found Smith, who skipped a seed into the bottom left corner of the cage to grab an 8-2 lead entering the break.
After halftime, CNU put on a defensive clinic. Bellinger came through with a shorthanded save after swallowing a low liner from the left side. The senior All-American also thwarted a breakaway with a leaping stop during a one-on-one showdown with a Wolverine, while Siaton and Smith both disrupted clear attempts to keep a tight lid on the Grove City attack.
Although the visitors eventually slapped a goal on the board, the Captains responded at the end of the quarter. During a man-up situation,
Kevin Miller lofted a teardrop over the defense. On the interior, Smith caught the pass and struck on the inside to complete his hat-trick.
Still fostering a six-goal lead entering the fourth quarter, Christopher Newport put the game on ice. Despite a late rally by the visitors, the Captains never lost control of the contest. On the offensive end, Kelley added some long-pole lightning off a restart. After sidestepping a fellow defenseman near the center stripe, he stormed up the gut, avoided a second Wolverine, and wrapped a missile around the keeper for CNU's 10th goal.
Later, on the defensive end, Bellinger came back with two more saves, while Bralley had a slick pick on an errant pass in traffic to help wrap up the victory.
Overall, Christopher Newport held a 55-31 advantage in shots and a 34-22 lead in ground balls. The Captains also won 13 of the game's 21 faceoffs, including an 11-for-17 performance by Giunchi. Along with his 11 faceoff wins, Giunchi hauled in seven ground balls, while Kelley added four rollers on the back end.
CNU will return to action on Tuesday when the team hosts Franklin and Marshall at 3 p.m.
