NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will continue its six-game homestand on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains host Randolph-Macon in a non-conference tilt at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the midweek match-up, CNU sits at 5-0 on the season, including 3-0 at home. Meanwhile, Randolph-Macon is 4-0 with a 3-0 mark on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, Christopher Newport will provide a live broadcast of the contest with Jake Myers and Jackson Deal calling all of the action. Live stats will also be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
CNU enters Wednesday riding a five-game winning streak, including three straight triumphs against nationally-ranked competition. During an eight-day stretch, the Captains knocked off No. 9 Gettysburg, No. 12 Washington and Lee, and No. 17 Stevenson. That marked just the second time in program history that the squad beat three straight top-25 foes. Previously, the 2023 team handled No. 1 RIT, No. 6 Washington and Lee, and No. 7 Dickinson during a six-day span.
Remarkably, Christopher Newport's next three opponents also earned recognition in this week's USILA National Coaches Poll. Randolph-Macon and Grove City both received votes in the latest rankings while slotting just outside of the top-25. Meanwhile, Franklin & Marshall was listed 23rd in the nation.
So far this season, CNU has consistently shined in the second half of games. Overall, the Captains have outscored their opposition by a combined 35-14 margin after halftime. The squad has not been outscored by any of its opponents in either the third or fourth quarter during a game this spring.
Continuing that trend last week, Christopher Newport flipped an 8-6 deficit into a 13-10 win against Washington and Lee on Wednesday before turning a slim 9-8 advantage into a 16-11 victory against Stevenson on Saturday.
Earning accolades for their work in those two games,
Kevin Miller and
Mason Bellinger swept the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Player of the Week awards. On the offensive end, Miller posted 16 total points during the two games. He had six assists in both contests, which equaled the fourth-highest total in program history and the finest effort against a nationally-ranked foe. Additionally, his nine total points against the Mustangs matched the seventh-most by a Captain.
On the other side, Bellinger contributed a pair of double-digit save efforts after pocketing 10 stops against W&L and 13 against Stevenson. He also secured seven ground balls in the win over the Mustangs, which marked the highest total by a goalie since Matt Hayden picked up eight against Frostburg State on March 28, 2015.
Along with the award-winning duo,
Jamie Smith had 10 goals during the two games last week, while
Ryan Miller had nine points.
Grant Giunchi also won 34 of his 54 faceoffs, and both
Mark Davison and
Rory Keverline had multiple takeaways in both contests.
After assisting each other on five of the team's goals on Saturday, Smith and
Kevin Miller also became the highest-scoring tandem in program history. During the course of their 27 games together, they have teamed up on 48 total goals. Previously, former All-Americans Coby Auslander and Drew Miller joined forces on 44 tallies from 2020-24.
Smith and Miller also extended their own individual streaks on Saturday. Miller has registered at least one assist in 28 straight games, which stands as the longest run in program history. Meanwhile, Smith collected a goal in his 23rd consecutive outing. That ranks as the fourth-longest stretch by a Captain, trailing only Andrew Cook (54),
Brett Jackson (29), and Dylan Rice (27).
Picked third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, Randolph-Macon has opened the 2026 campaign with four straight victories, including a 12-6 triumph at Mary Washington on Friday. Nine different Yellow Jackets recorded a goal against the Eagles, including a hat-trick by Peyton Rodriguez. On the defensive end, Jack Isaacs notched nine saves, while Brodie Kent had five takeaways.
Boasting a veteran-laden roster, Randolph-Macon features three Preseason All-Americans. Headlining that group, Mike Allen was a first-team USILA Preseason All-American after being named the ODAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2025. So far this season, he has 13 caused turnovers and 21 ground balls to go along with five points, including four assists.
Along with Allen, Kent was hailed as a third-team Preseason All-American and currently leads the team with 15 takeaways in addition to 13 ground balls. Meanwhile, Will Robertson was an honorable mention selection. In four games, the faceoff specialist has won 33 of his 59 attempts while adding 15 ground balls and a goal.
In 15 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 9-6 edge in the series, including a 19-7 win in 2023. Among the returners from that game,
Daniel Siaton had a goal for the Captains, while Allen and Kent combined for four caused turnovers for the Yellow Jackets. In a familial connection,
Jamie Smith's older brother, Jack Smith, had an assist for RMC during that match-up as well.
After Wednesday's tilt, CNU will remain at home for a Saturday showdown against Grove City beginning at noon.
