NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the midst of a three-game homestand, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will welcome Roanoke to town for a non-conference battle beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the weekend, CNU and Roanoke both sit at 1-0 on the season. While the Captains will be making their second straight appearance at home, the Maroons will be hitting the road for the first time this year.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Coming into Saturday's clash, both programs earned recognition in the latest
USA Lacrosse Magazine National Poll. After starting the year unranked, CNU moved to 20th in the most recent rankings. Meanwhile, Roanoke sat just outside of the top-20 as one of five programs listed in the "Also Considered" category.
Christopher Newport opened the 2026 campaign with a commanding 23-2 victory over Berry last Friday. The 23 goals equaled the sixth-most in program history and the finest effort since a 24-5 triumph against Southern Virginia on April 2, 2019. Meanwhile, the margin of victory was the squad's largest since a 23-1 win against Virginia Wesleyan on March 20, 2021.
In addition to the offensive heroics, CNU had 24 caused turnovers, which was the fourth-highest total in school history.
On an individual level,
Brookelyn Morrison tied the program record with eight takeaways while also adding six ground balls, six draw controls, and five points. With that performance, she became the first Captain to secure five strips, five rollers, five draws, and five points in a single game.
Fittingly, the senior All-American was named the USA Lacrosse National Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Along with the award-winning star,
Faith O'Connor opened the season with six points, including five goals.
Brooklynn Peterson and
Elena Sorkin also chipped in with hat-tricks, while
Molly Campbell and
Kate Lamendola had three assists apiece.
In addition to Peterson, who became the seventh player in program history to register a hat-trick in her collegiate debut,
Sam Murphy also made a memorable first impression with the Captains. Against the Vikings, she came away with a game-high seven draw controls. That was the second-highest total by a Captain in her debut. Only CNU Hall of Famer Meaghan Galvin eclipsed that performance after plucking nine draws against Washington and Lee on February 16, 2014.
Roanoke also kicked off the 2026 campaign with an emphatic victory after knocking off St. Mary's (Md.), 17-9. Maddie McDonald tied her career-high with seven goals, while Zoe Blair matched her personal-standard with five strikes. On the other end of the field, Kendall Todd secured 14 saves, which equaled the finest performance of her career.
A Preseason All-American, McDonald led the Maroons with 56 goals and 75 draw controls last year. Blair and Liza Ferguson are also back after garnering All-Conference accolades in 2025. A standout on the defensive end, Ferguson started all 19 games last spring and kicked off her junior campaign with a takeaway, ground ball, and draw control in the win over St. Mary's (Md.).
In 21 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds an 11-10 edge in the series, including a 15-11 triumph in Salem last April. During that game, Morrison tied the single-game school record with 14 draw controls, while O'Connor hammered home five goals. On the other side, Blair had five tallies for the Maroons.
After this weekend's showdown, CNU will return to action on February 28 for a 4 p.m. tilt against St. Mary's (Md.).
