No. 25 CNU Women's Tennis Opens Season With 7-0 Shutout Over RIT

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Opening up the season indoors at the James River Country Club, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 shutout over RIT (3-2) on Friday afternoon. The match took under three hours as the Captains improved to 1-0 with a dominant win at home. 

CNU kicked things off with a quick doubles sweep including a 6-0 win at No. 2 behind Kendal Chang and Samantha Robertson. The Captains duo downed Melanie Saborio and Shayna Agarwal without surrendering a game. On the top line, Lindsey Bergelin paired with Kylie Schaefer to capture a 6-2 win against Emily Greb and Kira Kronenberg. Rounding out the doubles sweep was Erin Gross and Eva Taylor recording a 6-1 victory against Anika Galkiewicz and Abby Finchum at No. 3. 

Moving into singles play, the Captains rolled to a clinching win with victories on the top four lines before finishing the shutout in the final two matches at 5 and 6. 

Schaefer capped a two-win season debut at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-2 matchup win against Greb. Chang also secured her second win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 against Kronenberg. Three more CNU players had multiple wins as Eva Taylor gave up just one game at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0) against Saborio, Robertson blanked Galkiewicz at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0), and Gross rolled by Agarwal at No. 5 (6-0, 6-2). 

The final match of the day rested on the shoulders of rookie Sophia Dadley at No. 6 and the newcomer paid off her collegiate debut with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Finchum. With a pair of wins in the fall, Dadley has opened her CNU career with three straight singles victories. 

On Saturday, RIT will return to the JRCC Indoor Courts to take on Averett University in a neutral site matchup beginning at 1:00 p.m. Then, on Sunday, Averett will face the host Captains at 9:00 a.m.
