No. 25 CNU Women's Tennis Blanks Averett University, 7-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team captured a 7-0 shutout over Averett University on a chilly and rainy Sunday afternoon in Newport News. The Captains improved to 2-0 while playing indoors at the James River Country Club to pick up the 16th straight victory against the Cougars. 

First, the Captains secured the doubles point with a sweep of all three matches in pairs play. On the top line, Lindsey Bergelin and Kylie Schaefer played together against Elisa Battermann and Dilara Sultanova for a 6-1 win. The team point was clinched moments later when Kendal Chang and Samantha Robertson finished off Ella Boddington and Annika Kellerer at No. 2 by a final score of 6-2. Finally, Emma Carver and Erin Gross added a win at No. 3 against Siddhi Khot and Sunna Maass, 6-2. 

Moving into singles play, five CNU players logged multiple wins on the day for the Captains including on the top three lines. Chang wrapped up a two-win performance at No. 1 after surrendering just a single game in the straight-set victory. She downed Brenda Poulakidas by a count of 6-1, 6-0. 

Also earning her second win of the day was junior Kylie Schaefer, who snagged a 6-2, 6-1 win over Harshri Asher at No. 2. And Robertson matched her teammates with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 against Khot. 

Playing at No. 4 singles, senior Eva Taylor rolled to a win against Kellerer for the Captains, 6-1, 6-0, while Bergelin and Gross finished out two-win performances at No. 5 and 6, respectively. Bergelin dispatched Maass by a score of 6-4, 6-3, and Gross downed Battermann, 6-2, 6-1. 

CNU will hit the road for its next five matches over the next several weeks starting with a trip to Lexington, Va. for the Washington and Lee Invite on February 21-22. CNU will take on Swarthmore College, ranked No. 22 in the nation, on Saturday, February 21 at 11:00 a.m. before facing the host and 19th-ranked Generals on Sunday at Noon.
