NJAC Honors Barry and Tharrington as Captains Emerge in AFCA National Poll Following 3-0 Start

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Two members of the Christopher Newport University offensive unit were honored on Monday by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) as the Captains emerged in another national poll. CNU is ranked 24th in the weekly national poll from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), after being ranked 23rd on Sunday by D3football.com.

Junior quarterback Connor Barry was named the Offensive Player of the Week and freshman running back Drevyon Tharrington was chosen the Offensive Rookie of the Week after the Captains scored 41 points in a 41-27 home win over 13th-ranked Susquehanna at TowneBank Stadium. Barry completed 17 of 30 passes vs. the River Hawks, with three touchdown throws and 374 passing yards. The Vienna, Va., native also scored on a touchdown run as the Captains improved to 3-0 to start the season. Barry has now completed 53 of 76 passes this season with 12 touchdowns and just one interception. He leads the nation in passing efficiency, and was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks to start the campaign.

Tharrington, meanwhile, led the Captains in rushing on Saturday with 57 yards on nine carries. The Norfolk product and Granby High School grad averaged 6.3 yards per carry and also caught a pass for six yards.

Christopher Newport has now matched the school's longest winning streak with eight straight wins, and Paul Crowley's squad will be looking to set a new school winning streak when the Captains open play in the NJAC Saturday in Glassboro, N.J., against Rowan University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. It will be the first of seven straight NJAC games, and Rowan is 2-0-1 following a victory on Saturday at Lycoming, 34-23.

The last time Christopher Newport appeared in the AFCA Division III Coaches Poll, presented by Hudl, was on September 26, 2016, at #25. Almost nine years later, the Captains are back after beating Susquehanna. The victory over a ranked opponent was the first for CNU since the Captains beat 17th-ranked Wesley in 2016.
