NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University returns to TowneBank Stadium Saturday for a battle with 13th-ranked Susquehanna University. The Family Weekend showdown will kick off at 12 noon, and will be the first meeting ever of the programs. The Captains were off last week and are 2-0 after victories over Trine and Gettysburg to open the 25th season of CNU football. Susquehanna is 2-1 and coming off a 40-22 home loss last Saturday to third-ranked Johns Hopkins.
"It's always exciting to be playing at home against a very good opponent and on Family Weekend with so many friends and family members in the stands," Head Coach
Paul Crowley said this week. "We've been working hard over the last two weeks, and I think we're really focused. So much of playing well is about focusing on each individual game as they come, and attention to detail is always crucial. We're excited about this opportunity."
With their 2-0 start to the season, the Captains have now won seven straight games dating back to last season. This marks the fourth time in program history the Captains have won seven straight games, and Christopher Newport's all-time longest winning streak is eight games, set during the 2008 season that saw CNU go 8-2 and advance to the NCAA Tournament as Champions of the USA South Athletic Conference.
The last time the Captains saw action two weeks ago, senior running back
Gunner White scored four times in CNU's 49-14 victory at Gettysburg College. White, from Virginia Beach, has now scored 39 times in 33 games as a Captain, setting a new school mark for touchdowns scored in a career. CNU used a 28-point second quarter to open a 42-7 edge at halftime, and cruised to the 35-point victory. The Captains out-gained the Bullets of Gettysburg in total yards, 550-308, and scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions of the game, accounting for the 49-point output. CNU has now out-scored its opposition in the first two victories by a combined score of 87-21.
CNU quarterback
Connor Barry has been spectacular over the first two games, and has completed 36 of 46 pass attempts (78 percent) with nine touchdown throws and no interceptions. The junior from Vienna, Va., has thrown for 569 yards and has averaged almost 16 yards per completion so far in 2025.
The River Hawks enter Saturday's showdown ranked 13th in the country, after being ranked fourth last week before they fell at home to third-ranked Johns Hopkins last Saturday, 40-22. Susquehanna was 12-2 last year and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals before falling to eventual national champion, North Central. The Hawks are 43-7 over their last 50 games dating back to 2021.
Standing Room tickets are the only tickets still available for Saturday's battle, and will go on sale at TowneBank Stadium Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Gates will open at 11:00 a.m. Standing room tickets will be $5.00.
