Captains Volleyball Rolls to 3-0 Win Over Haverford College

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With freshmen Emmy Carpenedo and Fielding Croft doing most of the offensive damage, Christopher Newport University returned home to the Freeman Center after two weekends on the road for a 3-0 win (25-23, 25-19, 25-15) over Haverford (Pa.) College.

Carpenedo had a career-high 12 kills, five coming in the second set, on a .400 hitting percentage. Croft had 29 assists and two kills while playing the entire game.

Senior Alyssa Dozier and junior Samantha Dorn finished with six kills each. Simara Alexander had five and Avery Hanly four along with 11 digs.

In the first set, CNU took the lead for good at 5-4 but never led by more than three points. It was tied at 23, and the Captains put it away with a service error by Haverford and an ace by Carpenedo.

Haverford jumped out to a10-3 lead in the second set. But CNU took over with a 7-0 run to force the set's only tie and rolled from there.

After falling behind 10-3 in the second set, CNU outscored Haverford 47-24 the rest of the match.

On Saturday, the Captains (8-5) will play a doubleheader against opponents from across the HRBT. CNU will go against No. 23 Virginia Wesleyan (14-0) at 2 p.m. in the Freeman Center. The Captains are 23-4 against the Marlins after last year's 3-1 win in Virginia Beach.

At 5 p.m., CNU will face Regent University (8-3). Regent is in its first season as a member of the Coast-to-Coast Conference.
