LEXINGTON, Va. -- After capturing a 2-0 win against Roanoke College on Wednesday night, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team is back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Captains (6-0-1) will travel to Alston Parker Watt Field on the campus of Washington and Lee University for a nationally-ranked showdown against the Generals. The third-ranked Captains will look for the first win in the all-time series against No. 15 Washington and Lee with kickoff scheduled for Noon.
Heading into the Saturday afternoon tilt, the host Generals have a 4-2-0 overall record while facing a challenging slate that includes three teams currently in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25. W&L dropped matches against Swarthmore (0-1), now No. 21 in the rankings, and most recently, No. 5 Emory (0-1) on a neutral field last Sunday. The Generals also have a marquee win, downing then-No. 5 Johns Hopkins (2-1) on September 7. The Captains represent the fourth ranked team, third in the top-five, that WLU has faced in four straight weekends.
In the all-time series against Washington and Lee, Christopher Newport has never won in five matchups with an 0-2-3 all-time record. Last year, the two teams played in Newport News for the first time and settled for a scoreless draw after 90 minutes of action. It marked the second straight 0-0 tie in the series, which was renewed in 2023 in Lexington.
For fans unable to make the trek in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available online. Links to both can be found on the women's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
CNU has won two in a row and boasts an unbeaten record through the first seven games of the season. The Captains have featured an impressive balance between a high-octane offense and a stingy defense that has allowed just two goals in seven games played. On one end of the field, junior goalkeeper
Amy Sidaway continues to make history with nearly every game after moving into second place all-time in shutouts at CNU on Wednesday night. She ranks second among all active NCAA goalkeepers with a 0.40 career goals-against average.
On the other side,
Hanna Heaton has also climbed the charts among the active leaders offensively. Despite just two full seasons in Division III, plus the start of her senior season, Heaton ranks fourth among all active players in career assists with 25. She is one goal shy of becoming just the second CNU player ever to record 25 career goals and 25 career assists.
This season, CNU is outscoring opponents, 15-2, with eight different goal scorers so far. Senior
Molly Seventko is tied with Heaton for the team lead in scoring with eight points while junior
Lexi Hazelgrove has also matched them in total goals with three this year.
Alex Devers has a pair of goals while
Katy Bronski,
Kyleigh Gough,
Grace Shifflett, and
AP Webb have each found the back of the net once.
The CNU defense features junior
Bella DiTommaso and newcomers
Malayah Warner,
Addy Hennessy, and
Nora Cook. The Captains have five shutouts in seven games for a .714 shutout percentage, ranking 34th in Division III.
Washington and Lee has also featured a dominant defense to this point in the season, surrendering just three goals for a 0.50 goals-against average in six games. Kate McEnroe has started in goal all six games while making 32 saves for a .914 save percentage. Senior All-American defender Bryn Bissinger leads the back line with fellow senior and All-Region selection Sydney Devory. Offensively, the Generals feature All-American Sarah Zimmerman with two goals and an assist including a pair of gamewinners. She leads the team in total attempts with 20 shots so far this season.
