NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Holding onto their position as the third-ranked team in the nation, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team will return home for a matchup against Roanoke College (3-2-1) on Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. The Captains will put their sterling 5-0-1 overall record on the line against the Maroons with live stats and, weather permitting, a live video webcast at CNUsports.com.
The Captains went 1-0-1 this week with a tie against then-No. 8 Case Western Reserve, but the Spartans moved up to No. 5 in the nation courtesy of their draw with Christopher Newport. Messiah is the new team atop the rankings followed by Emory, who's undefeated record vaulted the Eagles ahead of CNU at No. 2 in the nation.
CNU will take on the Maroons of Roanoke College for the 19th time in the all-time series with Christopher Newport boasting a 13-5-0 advantage. The Captains have won six straight overall and boast a 7-1-0 record at home against Roanoke. In the six-game winning streak, CNU has outsored Roanoke by a count of 25-4, including a 6-0 shutout on the road last season.
Last year, the Captains were led by
Alex Devers with two goals and
Hanna Heaton with a goal and two assists. All six goals were scored by players who returned to the roster this season as
Bella Ventimiglia,
Molly Seventko, and
Lexi Hazelgrove each added scores in the 2024 matchup.
This season, Seventko has caught fire for the CNU offense and ranks second on the team with three goals and one assist for seven points. Heaton has one more assist than her senior classmate to lead the squad with eight points on three goals and two helpers.
Defensively, CNU has been as stout as ever, allowing just two goals in the first six games of the season for a 0.33 goals-against average. The Captains have four shutouts while junior goalkeeper
Amy Sidaway has played all but 19 minutes between the pipes with 12 saves and an .857 save percentage. On the back line, rookies
Malayah Warner,
Addy Hennessy, and junior
Bella DiTommaso have started all six games to lead the way. DiTommaso has played all 540 minutes and is the only CNU player to have not left the field yet this season.
Roanoke comes into the game with a four-game unbeaten streak including wins against Meredith (2-0), New Jersey City (1-0), and Greensboro (3-0). In the Maroons' most recent game, three different players registered goals against Greensboro while locking down their third shutout of the season. Offensively, Rebecca Carr and Lauren Fisher have scored twice to lead the early season statistics for Roanoke.
The matchup is currently scheduled to be played at Captains Field, the home of CNU soccer, but heavy rain in Newport News has created the possibility of pushing the game to Captains Turf Field. Fans planning to attend the game should be aware of the potential facility change -- admission will be free of charge, regardless of where the game is played.
Following the Wednesday evening matchup, the Captains head back on the road this weekend for a second nationally-ranked showdown in four games when CNU takes on No. 15 Washington and Lee University at Noon on Saturday, September 20.
