Nationally-Ranked CNU Women's Soccer Sweeps C2C Weekly Honors After Road Trip

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a successful road trip to Ohio, the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team maintained its unblemished overall record with a 5-0-1 start to the year. With a 1-1 draw against 8th-ranked Case Western Reserve and a 2-1 win at Ohio Wesleyan, the Captains were led by Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Hanna Heaton and Defensive Player of the Week Addy Hennessy

Heaton picked up her sixth career C2C Offensive Player of the Week certificate and first of the season while the rookie, Hennessy, secured her second honor in three weeks as a Captain.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Captains continued its reputation as one of the best units in the nation by securing the 18th C2C Defensive Player of the Week certificate in the last 20 awarded by the league office. Despite surrendering two goals this week, the defense was tremendous while taking on a potent CWRU offense on Friday before holding down OWU on Sunday.

Facing an offense that is averaging 6.4 goals per game when not playing the Captains defense, Hennessy and the rest of the CNU back line did an outstanding job limiting the nationally-ranked Spartans to just a single score. Then, against the Battling Bishops, the CNU defense allowed just three shots including only one on frame.

Hennessy also continued the hot streak to her young career with another assist, her third, to help lift CNU to a 2-1 win over Ohio Wesleyan. With a 1-0 lead, Hennessy's long throw into the box set up senior Katy Bronski for a killer finish in the box to secure an all-important insurance goal. The home team scored minutes later to ensure Bronski's tally would be the game-winning goal. Hennessy leads the Captains with three assists through the first six games of the season.

On the other end of the field, Hanna Heaton added two more chapters to her illustrious career by climbing the all-time charts in goals, points, and assists. First, she assisted on the game-tying goal against Case Western Reserve to secure her 25th career assist and become the first player since Carson Pokorny (2016-19) to reach the milestone. Then, with another spectacular finish on a free kick, Heaton delivered her 24th career goal  to kick off the scoring on Sunday against Ohio Wesleyan.

Heaton now ranks third all-time in assists while posting a program record 0.50 assists per game. Her three-point performance also slid her up to eighth all-time in career points with 73, passing Pokorny and Dani Gunderson. Through the first 50 games of her career, Heaton has scored 1.46 points per game, ranking third all-time.

Christopher Newport will put its sterling unbeaten record to the test this week with a home game on Wednesday evening against Roanoke College at 5:00 p.m. On Saturday, September 20, the Captains will face another nationally-ranked test when they travel to No. 15 Washington and Lee University for a Noon kickoff.
