NEW YORK, N.Y. -- No. 25 Christopher Newport University posted a season-best .340 hitting percentage and rolled to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-15) win over Montclair State Friday in the NYU Tournament at John A. Paulson Center.
The Captains (5-3) won their third consecutive match behind 11 kills (.455) by middle blocker
Alyssa Dozier, who also had four blocks. Sophomore
Carley Coghill continued her strong play with seven kills on a .429 percentage.
Simara Alexander and
Samantha Dorn also finished with seven kills, each at .308.
Fielding Croft led CNU with 17 assists and
Lauren Hobbs added 16.
Avery Hanly had a team-high three service aces.
The day didn't start out smoothly for the Captains, who gave up four consecutive points to fall behind 7-2 in the opening set. CNU answered with a 7-2 run of its own for a 9-9 tie. There would be 10 more ties in the set, the final one coming at 24-24.
The Captains won the next two points, a kill by Coghill and a block by Coghill and Alexander, to take the set.
CNU never trailed in the second set and secured the win with an ace by Hobbs on game point. The third had some early drama with six ties and two lead changes, but the Captains closed with a 6-1 run.
CNU will conclude play in the NYU Tournament Saturday against No. 22 New York University at 11 a.m.
