Dozier and James Reach Milestones As Captains Sweep Weekend at NYU; No. 25 CNU Volleyball Downs No. 22 NYU, 3-2

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Alyssa Dozier became the fifth player in program history to reach 400 career blocks, and No. 25 Christopher Newport University rallied for a dramatic 3-2 win (25-19, 14-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13) over New York University Saturday in the John A. Paulson Center. The win gave the Captains (6-3) a weekend sweep in the Big Apple. CNU defeated Montclair State 3-0 on Friday as Megan James recorded her 1,000th career dig.

In winning its fourth consecutive match, CNU rallied from a 2-1 deficit against the nation's 22nd-ranked team. The Captains trailed 23-22 in the fourth set but reeled off three consecutive points — a kill by Dozier, an attack error by NYU, and a clinching kill by James.

That sent the match to a deciding fifth set, where the Violets jumped out an 8-4 lead. After a timeout, the Captains answered with four consecutive points (including kills by Carley Coghill and Avery Hanly) to force an 8-8 tie. NYU (4-3) recovered and took a 13-10 lead, but the Captains closed the match with a 5-0 run. Hanly had the winning kill off an assist from Fielding Croft.

Dozier led a balanced CNU attack with 11 kills (.310) and 10 blocks for a double-double. Simara Alexander and Coghill each had 10 kills. Samantha Dorn, Hanly and James had eight apiece.

Lauren Hobbs led the Captains with 22 assists. Croft finished with 21, and libero Maddie Hanes added four along with 16 digs.

Next for CNU is another challenging trip, this one to Huntingdon, Pa., for the Juniata College Asics Invitational. The Captains will begin play Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 1 Juniata (7-1). CNU will face No. 4 Johns Hopkins Saturday at 1 p.m. and Nazareth University at 3 p.m.
