DELAWARE, Ohio --
Traveling to the Buckeye State for a pair of games this weekend, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will kick off its trip on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Ohio Wesleyan before heading to Denison for an 11 a.m. test on Sunday.

Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 4-0 overall, while Ohio Wesleyan is 2-2 and Denison is 1-3. Prior to their showdown with the Captains on Sunday, the Big Red will kick off the weekend on Friday evening at home against Sewanee.

For those fans unable to make the trip, live stats and a video stream of both contests will be available. Direct links can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

This weekend will be Christopher Newport's first trip to Ohio since the squad upended Oberlin and Kenyon in back-to-back battles in 2017. In fact, those are the only two previous games that the Captains have played in the state of Ohio in program history.

Christopher Newport is coming off an impressive two-game homestand in which the team collected a pair of shutout victories. CNU opened that stretch with a 1-0 win over Washington and Lee on Sunday before blanking Virginia Wesleyan, 7-0, on Wednesday evening.

During the triumph over the Marlins, Emily Evans became the 20th player in school history to reach 50 career points after landing her second game-winning goal of the year. Ellie Nuckols also produced her first career multi-goal effort, while Kelly Via and Mari de Castro sank their first collegiate tallies. Additionally, Morgan Shealer helped anchor the back line with three blocked shots during an early defensive stand.

Wednesday's victory was Christopher Newport's 10th straight triumph at home dating back to the 2023 campaign. That stands as the sixth-longest active winning streak in the nation.

So far this year, Courtney Hughlett leads CNU with 12 points, including five goals. Avery Mast and Caroline Hughlett have also dished out four assists apiece, while 13 total Captains have scored at least one point this year. That group includes Via, de Castro, Kate Engle, Victoria Trejo-Wearden, and Emma Weber, who have all secured their first career point in 2025.

Ohio Wesleyan comes into Saturday on a two-game roll after storming past Centre, 6-1, on Sunday before trouncing Transylvania, 9-0, on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the match-up with CNU will be the team's second nationally-ranked duel of the year after a hard-fought 1-0 setback against No. 21 Rochester in the opener on August 30.

After advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years during the 2024 campaign, Ohio Wesleyan was picked as the preseason favorite in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Among the program's standout veterans, Grace Ammon and Alyssa Markell were both named to the NFHCA Preseason Watchlist. Ammon is currently tied for the team-lead with four goals, while Markell has started a pair of games on the midfield unit.

Denison currently sits at 1-3 on the season, although the team's first two losses came at the hands of No. 12 Shenandoah and No. 15 Lynchburg. The Big Red also dropped a 2-1 decision at Washington and Lee before rebounding with a 5-0 triumph in the league opener against Wittenberg on Wednesday.

Picked just behind Ohio Wesleyan in the NCAC Preseason Poll, Denison earned four first-place votes in the rankings after graduating only a pair of seniors from last year's team, which produced an 11-7 record. For their work in 2024, Emma Gebhardt and Tabitha Chandler were selected to the NFHCA Preseason Watchlist this fall. So far this year, Gebhardt leads the team with six points, while Chandler has anchored the back line after being named the league's Defensive Player of the Year last season.

CNU holds a 6-0 lead in the all-time series against Denison and a 1-0 advantage against Ohio Wesleyan. Last year, the Captains picked up identical 4-0 victories against both programs in Newport News.

After this weekend's road trip, Christopher Newport will return to action on September 20 with a neutral-site tussle against Messiah in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
