VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Christopher Newport freshman Gabi McGehee has been named the first ever Colonial Women's Golf Conference Golfer of the Week as the league announced the inaugural award on Thursday morning. McGehee participated in the first two tournaments of the Fall for the Captains and averaged a team-best 76.5 through the first four rounds of the season. 

McGehee becomes the first player to garner Conference Golfer of the Week recognition after leading CNU to a fourth-place finish at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational  on August 30-31 and a second-place showing at the Transylvania Women's Golf Kickoff Classic. 

The freshman from Mineral, Va. tied for fourth with a record-breaking performance at the Transylvania Kickoff Classic. In the first round, McGehee became just the fifth player in program history to record a round under par with a one-under 72 on the Par 73 layout. She lowered the single round low scoring record on a Par 73 by three strokes, besting the previous mark of 75, and posted the second finest ever round in relation to par by a rookie. McGehee had just one bogey in the round while recording 15 pars and two birdies. 

By the end of the two-day tournament, McGehee secured her first career top-five finish to wrap up the event with a 147 (72-75). She was a big part of Christopher Newport smashing the program record for team scoring in a 36-hole tournament with a 19-over par 603 (298-305). 

Prior to the record-breaking performance, she also added an 18th-place showing at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational. She shot a 159 (80-79) to finish the tournament at 13-over par. 

The Colonial Women's Golf Conference is in its first year of existence after being approved for active NCAA Division III single-sport conference status effective September 1, 2025. The CWGC includes founding members Babson College, Carlow University, Christopher Newport University, Kean University, Penn State Altoona, Salisbury University, and Stockton University.
