Three Captains Named to NFHCA National Collegiate Watchlist

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- With the start of the 2025 campaign just 24 hours away, three members of the Christopher Newport field hockey team were named to the NFHCA National Collegiate Watchlist as Caroline Hughlett, Courtney Hughlett, and Lily Kerr were all recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Thursday morning.

The prestigious honor is used to celebrate the student-athletes around the country with the strongest potential to earn All-Region and All-American honors during the upcoming campaign. Kerr earned a spot on the list for the third straight year, while the Hughlett twins secured the recognition for the second consecutive season.

All three Captains are coming off of a 2024 campaign in which they earned postseason honors from the NFHCA. Courtney Hughlett was named a third-team All-American by the organization, while Kerr and Caroline Hughlett joined her on the All-Region squad.

Entering her senior campaign, Kerr has established herself as one of the top goalkeepers in the nation. A two-time All-American and three-time first-team All-State and All-Conference honoree, she sits second in school history with a stellar .854 career save percentage, while her 0.65 goals-against-average is the third-finest rate by a Captain. She also established a new program standard with her 18th career shutout after blanking No. 10 York (Pa.), 1-0, in the NCAA Tournament last fall.

Dominant throughout 2024, Kerr eventually finished last year ranked third in the NCAA in goals-against-average (0.61) and save percentage (.863). She also tied the single-season school record with seven shutouts and led the league with 69 total saves.

In just two seasons with the Captains, Caroline Hughlett has stockpiled awards for her work on the attack. Entering her junior season, she is already a two-time All-Conference and All-State honoree. Also named to the first-team All-Region squad in 2024, she ranks 10th on the program's all-time charts with a 1.22 points-per-game average during her tenure. Her four penalty stroke goals are also the second-most by a Captain.

Last year, Hughlett finished with 19 points while slotting second on the team with seven goals. She also deposited a pair of game-winning tallies, including the clincher against St. Mary's (Md.) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

A centerpiece on the midfield unit, Courtney Hughlett solidified her position as one of the finest midfielders in the country while earning All-American nods during her sophomore season. An elite playmaker, she already ranks sixth in school history with 19 assists, while her 13 helpers last year tied the single-season program record and marked the seventh-most in the NCAA. Overall, her 0.51 assists-per-game rate during her career is the highest in school lore.

During the 2024 campaign, Hughlett posted a point in eight straight contests from September 28 - October 26, which equaled the fourth-longest streak by a Captain. In the end, she tallied at least one point in 13 of her appearances last fall.

Christopher Newport will kick off the 2025 season on Friday evening when the Captains host Bridgewater at 6 p.m.
